ANNOUNCED ANY NAMES OR. ANY CHARGES AT THIS TIME. IOWA INVESTIGATORS SAY THREE OFFICERS SHOOT AND KILL AN ARMED MAN. THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY SAYS THE SUSPECT. ASKED OFFICERS TO COME TO THE HOME IN CEDAR RAPIDS LAST NIGHT. ANOTHER 911 CALLER THEN REPORTED THAT MAN WAS MAKING HOMICIDAL AND SUICIDAL STATEMENTS. INVESTIGATORS SAY THAT OFFICERS SAW THE MAN WITH A WEAPON IN HIS HAND. THEY SAY THAT THE OFFICERS TOLD HIM TO DROP IT, BUT INSTEAD HE RAISED IT TOWARD POLICE. THREE OFFICERS SHOT THE SUSPECT. HE DIED AT THE SCENE. INVESTIGATORS SAY A BYSTANDER WAS ALSO HIT. MEDICS TOOK HIM TO THE HOSPITAL. HIS CONDITION IS NOT KNOWN AT THIS TIME. NO OFFICERS WERE HURT.

Officers with the Cedar Rapids Police Department shot and killed a man during a welfare check call Saturday night. Just after 6:30 p.m., a 911 call came in for police to respond to an Iowa home near 31st Street NE. 911 dispatchers then received another call from a second party. According to investigators with the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the caller stated a man at the house was making suicidal and homicidal remarks and requested a welfare check. CRPD officers responded to the house and found the man along with the caller who asked for help. Officers at the scene saw the man with a weapon in his hands. Investigators said multiple verbal commands were given, asking him to drop the weapon. Instead, the man raised and pointed the weapon toward responding officers. Three officers fired their guns at the man, the gunfire hitting him and causing him to fall to the ground. Medics were called, but the man died at the scene.While officers fired at the man, the caller was also struck by bullets. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said he was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. The Division of Criminal Investigation Major Crime Unit is now investigating it as an officer-involved shooting. Once a report is filed, they will send it to the Linn County Attorney's office to determine if the use of force was justified. No officers were injured during the incident. The names of the officers who fired their weapons have not been released, but they have been placed on leave.The name of the man who was killed has not been released pending notification of the family.
