Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez have returned to Aston Villa's starting line-up for their Premier League clash against Brentford.

The pair sat out of their side's 4-1 defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday. Watkins was taken off as a precaution at half-time during Villa’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers after feeling discomfort in his hamstring. Martinez, meanwhile, missed the game at the Etihad due to illness.

Villa head coach Unai Emery had hinted pre-game that both Watkins and Martinez could feature on Saturday.

Watkins is Villa’s top scorer with 22 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions.

Toney drops to the bench with hip injury

Toney drops to the bench with hip injury

Ivan Toney has been named on the bench for Brentford's Premier League match against Aston Villa this afternoon, with the striker nursing a hip injury.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank admitted it was a "tough" decision to drop Toney, but added he is keen to have his star striker "fresh" for the run-in.

"He has a small muscle injury in his hip that affects him," said Frank. "He played the full Brighton game with it. This is his fourth match in quick succession; I want him fresh for the rest of the season. He is on the bench if we need him"

The 28-year-old has made 12 appearances since making his return from an eight-month FA ban for breaching gambling rules.

He has scored four goals in that time and made his England debut in the 2-0 win over Ukraine in March.

Brentford are currently 15th in the table with winnable games against Sheffield United, Luton Town and Everton to come after this afternoon's trip to Villa Park.

Man United U18s beat Liverpool 9-1

Manchester United beat Liverpool 9-1 in their Under-18 Premier League clash on Saturday.

United striker Ethan Wheatley scored a 57-minute hat-trick for the visitors, with ex-Derby youth product James Scanlon also grabbing a brace in a big win at Liverpool’s academy ground in Kirkby.

Liverpool head coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson was missing eight of the team that beat Arsenal 7-1 in the FA Cup Youth Cup just two months ago and those absentees were keenly felt.

Scanlon put his side ahead inside the first minute of the game before Wheatley doubled their lead 10 minutes later.

Wheatley added his second just three minutes later, before midfielder Ethan Williams found the net to put United 4-0 up midway through the first half.

Liverpool's Joe Bradshaw, 15, scored what proved to be his side's only goal of the game to make it 4-1 at the break.

United added five more goals in the second half to complete a famous 9-1 victory over their bitter rivals.

Pochettino won't become a 'populist' to win over Chelsea fans

Pochettino won't become a 'populist' to win over Chelsea fans

Mauricio Pochettino says he felt a connection with Chelsea supporters for the first time in the wild celebrations that followed Thursday’s dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, and insists he will not become a “populist” to endear himself to fans who still hold his Tottenham past against him.

Cole Palmer’s deflected shot in the 101st minute sparked an outpouring of joy among Pochettino and his coaching staff as supporters in the stands revelled in Chelsea ending a 12-match winless run against United with the latest fightback in Premier League history.

The result lifts Chelsea to 10th in the Premier League table, five points behind sixth-placed United with a game in hand, and Pochettino - who has been abused by sections of his own supporters in recent weeks - hopes the momentum and good feeling generated by the manner of the victory can become a significant turning point.

“I am so happy, not only for the three points or that our performance was better than Manchester United, but that I think this was my first time here at Stamford Bridge that I started to feel the connection with the fans,” Pochettino said. “That is going to be really helpful for us until the end of the season.

“That, for me, should be what’s really important. In a few days, we played one game that we were showing such low energy (against Burnley) and another that we started in the way we need to start them all. We need to be ready and now Sunday, we have another game in which we need to be ready.”

Klopp, Ten Hag warn against tragedy chanting ahead of Man Utd vs Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag have warned supporters against tragedy chanting ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool.

A man was charged in relation to tragedy chanting following last month's FA Cup quarter-final tie between the two sides after video footage was shared of a fan in the home section of the Old Trafford crowd. A number of arrests were also made by Greater Manchester Police following a variety of alleged offences.

Liverpool and United have since launched a joint initiative aimed at educating youngsters on the impact of chanting about Hillsborough, Heysel and Munich. Both clubs have vowed to issue bans to anyone committing tragedy-related abuse, whether in stadiums or online.

Klopp urged supporters to "show a bit of class", while Ten Hag called on fans to "focus entirely on backing their team".

“It is super important,” Klopp said. “There are different aspects to this and one is I don’t hear it, honestly, when I am on the sideline. But I heard after the game that it happened and it obviously is not great.

“In general it is just helpful that we educate our kids in specific things: respect, understanding, all these things.

“I just see two of the biggest clubs in the world, so let’s just show a bit of class in these moments, don’t sing this or sing that. Just show class, let the teams fight on the pitch, let’s play football. Besides that, just show a bit of class, that would be my wish for all of us.”

Ten Hag's programme notes for Sunday's game also address tragedy chanting.

“It is part of my duty to remind every supporter fortunate enough to be at today’s game that it must be enjoyed in the proper way, and not used as an excuse for abusing rival fans about Hillsborough, Heysel or any other historic tragedies," the United manager wrote.

"This is one of the truly great rivalries in world sport, for so many of the right reasons, and it is our responsibility to keep it that way.

"Whether the clubs meet at Old Trafford or Anfield, all supporters must focus entirely on backing their team and both Jurgen and I trust that we can count on that happening today”.

England must learn from Sweden draw - Wiegman

Sarina Wiegman is "disappointed" but insists England must learn after being held by Sweden in their opening game of Euro 2025 qualifying.

Alessia Russo put the defending European champions ahead in the first half at Wembley only for Fridolino Rolfo to equalise in the second.

The result leaves both sides on a point each in a group with France, who narrowly beat the Republic of Ireland in Metz.

"I think this group is really tough. Of course I'm disappointed, because we always want to win," Wiegman said.

"I think we scored a great goal, there was momentum in the game, we played well and we kept the ball a little longer.

"Second half I thought the goal was really unnecessary. They scored because we gave away a throw-in and from that throw-in we weren't able to take out the cross and they scored from that. That was disappointing.

"As we see Sweden is a very tough opponent. I do think we could have done a couple of things better, but also showed Sweden gave us a hard time at the moment.

"We just want to learn from these games, we want to do better every game as other countries want to do too. I think it just shows how close and how tight our competition is."

Erik ten Hag says he has “no doubts” he will be in charge of Manchester United at the start of next season and believes he is taking the club in “the right direction”.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has asked former Team GB chief Sir Dave Brailsford to undertake a structural review of the club, with Ten Hag’s position likely to be one of the items of consideration.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that no decision has been made on Ten Hag’s future, but planning for next season is happening with the Dutchman at the helm.

Haaland, De Bruyne back in for Man City at Palace

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are back in for Manchester City as they face Crystal Palace this afternoon.

Pep Guardiola's champions can go top of the Premier League with a wide margin of victory at Selhurst Park.

Both players missed Wednesday's 4-1 win over Aston Villa but are restored to the starting XI alongside John Stones, who also starts after missing out in midweek.

Phil Foden, who scored a hat-trick against Villa, is on the bench.

For Palace the headline news is Michael Olise returning to the squad after missing the last seven matches.

There are two types of entertaining football match.

There are those where some of the best players in the world combine for team moves and flashes of individual quality to produce captivating moments of sporting drama.

There are also those where some of the best players in the world forget years of physical and mental training for reasons best known to themselves, and delirious chaos ensues.

The 2023-24 Premier League season has served a heady dose of both with Thursday's barely believable game between Chelsea and Manchester United a vintage example of the latter.

Ramsey out for rest of season with foot injury

Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey will be out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury, Unai Emery has confirmed.

The 22-year-old has not featured since being forced off in the first half against Luton Town on March 2 due to an issue with his toe.

Emery said: “Jacob Ramsey has again some problems with his toe. He is not going to be available for the rest of the season.”

Ramsey has been restricted to 21 appearances in all competitions this term, having broken his metatarsal in the under-21 European Championship in July, before suffering a recurrence of the injury in October.

Are England veering off course?

Are England veering off course?

Sarina Wiegman has won the past two European Championships and is rightly regarded as a tournament specialist. But this qualification campaign for Euro 2025 is, in a sense, a new experience for her — with the Netherlands at Euro 2017 and England at Euro 2022, her sides were the hosts and were not forced to go through this process.

Indeed, this qualification is effectively a new experience for everyone. Rather than the usual groups that pit giants against minnows, this is a four-team group comprised entirely of sides who were at the World Cup last year. England, Sweden, France and the Republic of Ireland probably cannot be considered a group of death given all four sides could eventually qualify — two through the play-offs — but it’s still a very tough group.

Therefore, Friday’s meeting against Sweden felt like an unusual situation: a competitive game against strong opposition that was important but not crucial. It was as much about setting out England’s stall for the next 18 months as earning a good result.

But, in both senses, England will be disappointed with this 1-1 draw in front of 63,000 supporters at Wembley against a Sweden side deprived of a couple of key players.

Leicester must put financial issues to one side - Maresca

Enzo Maresca has told his Leicester City players to control their emotions and focus on the final push for promotion as the club’s off-field issues play out in the background.

Leicester face a Premier League charge for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR) after announcing losses of £89.7million for last season, and are under an EFL embargo for a suspected breach this season as well.

To avoid a potential sanction, several players may have to be sold before the end of June, while players in the final months of their contracts will not be able to re-sign new ones without special permission from the EFL — unless Leicester are promoted — raising the stakes even higher.

“After the Premier League (charge), the EFL (embargo) and now the accounts, hopefully, it’s finished and there is no more,” Maresca says.

“They are things we can’t control. The lawyers for the club are in charge of that.

“The only thing we can do is try to focus on our games. I try to convince myself and to convince the players that the only thing that we can do and we can be worried about are the games.

“I have the same feeling day by day in the training session that they (the players) are just focused on the football side.

“These things don’t affect us now. They are for the future. Then we see in a few months about the out-of-contract players and maybe look at things around the contracts going forward.

"Probably the best thing we can do is control the emotions because for this amount of events around the club."

Alex Livesey/Getty Images

Pep Guardiola believes it will be "almost impossible" to win the Premier League title if Manchester City fail to beat Crystal Palace this afternoon.

The defending champions start the day third in the table, three points behind current leaders Liverpool.

They could feasibly go top themselves — for a few hours at least — with the requisite goal difference swing but Guardiola feels anything other than a win could be the end of his side's challenge.

"We're third, not far away from the top of the Premier League, but if we drop points it will be almost impossible," he said with Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals to follow on Tuesday.

"So we have to win that game and after that we will have more time, not for recovery, but to prepare. So I have not had much time to see Real Madrid.

"I said, when we have been fighting for nine or 10 months for the Premier League, why should I be distracted now from this important game against Palace, when the distance is so close?"

England must demand higher standards - Russo

England must demand higher standards - Russo

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images

Alessia Russo insists England must "demand higher" of themselves after opening their Euro 2025 qualification campaign with a draw against Sweden at Wembley.

Arsenal striker Russo opened the scored for the Lionesses but Fridolina Rolfo equalised in the second-half to earn a share of the points.

It was a disappointing result for Sarina Wiegman's side, even against a team ranked sixth in the world.

England aim high under Wiegman and Russo believes they let their standards slip.

"Sweden are a top side, our group is tough," she told ITV. "We're a good side too so I think it's disappointing but we've come up against a strong side.

"Our standards are high, we know we can demand higher of each other. We will own that, but across the board, there were lower standards that we can improve on.

"We struggled to figure out the problems but we did get a draw. Every result and every point counts."

Howe expresses concerns about Newcastle post-season trip to Australia

Howe expresses concerns about Newcastle post-season trip to Australia

Justin Setterfield/Getty Images

Eddie Howe admits that Newcastle United’s post-season trip to Australia is far from ideal “from a physical perspective” following an exhausting campaign.

However, the head coach accepts that sometimes the squad and coaching staff are required to undertake such tasks “with the best attitude” when they are deemed to be “in the best interests” of the club.

Just three days after the conclusion of the campaign, one which has been defined by Newcastle’s injuries, Howe’s side will take on Tottenham Hotspur at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 22 in a friendly. There is then a second exhibition match against the A-League All Star team at Marvel Stadium on May 24.

The trip is motivated by Newcastle's need to increase their commercial revenue — with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) restricting their spending capacity until their income grows — and to gain more exposure in Australasia, as they aim to expand their appeal globally.

"I don’t think it’s something that, being honest, in my position you’re saying, ‘I want to go’," Howe said, when asked about his view on the Australia trip at his pre-Fulham press conference on Friday.

"But I understand the club’s position and we will back it if the club say we’re going."

Brighton won't take any chances with Joao Pedro

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi will not take any chances with 19-goal top scorer Joao Pedro against Arsenal at the Amex tonight.

The Brazilian made his comeback from nine matches out with a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Brentford.

De Zerbi says Joao Pedro was “very tired” after playing the whole game.

The Italian added: “We wouldn’t like to take a risk with him especially after two months of injury.”

Danny Welbeck, who came off the bench at Brentford, has scored on his last two starts.

He has scored in four of his last starts against former club Arsenal in all competitions.

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil has insisted he has no intention of walking away from Molineux after his latest comments on the club’s January business sounded alarm bells for some fans.

O’Neil’s post-match press conference following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Burnley — in which he appeared to express frustration at the failure to land a striker in January — raised concerns among supporters about his future.

Wolves fans saw former boss Julen Lopetegui leave on the eve of the current season after months of airing his frustrations over the transfer budget, but O’Neil played down comparisons between his situation and that of his predecessor.

ICYMI: Glasner confident Palace can exceed expectations in tricky run-in

ICYMI: Glasner confident Palace can exceed expectations in tricky run-in

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is refusing to write-off his team's chances of defying expectations despite a challenging run-in.

Palace host Manchester City on Saturday while their final games see them face six of the top eight sides.

They have picked up five points from Glasner’s opening five games, but are without a win since beating Burnley 3-0 in his first game in charge.

But Glasner prefers to take a positive outlook into his team's games.

“We have eight games, I want 24 points,” he said. “Of course we go for winning games. If we don’t want to win tomorrow it’s better I stay with my family enjoying the nice weather in London. It should be 21 degrees tomorrow - going sightseeing, hop-on hop-off (tourist bus) it’s brilliant. If you say it’s OK when you lose tomorrow I’ll do this.

“We are competitors, we want to win the game and if I don’t have this passion to win every single game then I will retire. I don’t like to say this is Man City (so we can’t win), we have respect and they play excellent."

City boss Pep Guardiola has never tasted defeat as a visiting manager at Selhurst Park, with Crystal Palace's last win over the Manchester outfit coming back in 2015, when Manuel Pellegrini was at the helm.

“I was impressed by their performance against Aston Villa and I’m really impressed by Pep Guardiola what he did over the last seven or eight years at Man City and before because I saw him working in Munich," said Glasner.

“That doesn’t mean we will run in with the white flag tomorrow and say ‘congratulations for the 3-0.’ I never will do this so I can’t do this. We go tomorrow to win the game.

“We know it will be hard work for us - a lot of running, a lot of focus, a lot of concentration but we will be believing in our situations and our moments. This is what I want to feel. Then we say maybe at the end congratulations to them, maybe they deserve it, but never before the game.”

After playing host to City, Palace's run-in includes games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle before a trip to Aston Villa on the final day of the season.
