Former Mayor William C. Schroeder appears to be the winner in a runoff election Tuesday to fill a one-year term on the Lancaster Village Board, but the margin is so slim that it's not certain.
Schroeder received 374 votes, while incumbent David Santoro had 362, Village Clerk and Treasurer Michael E. Stegmeier reported.
"Since the difference is less than 20 votes, there will be another mandatory recount of the ballots by the Erie County Board of Elections," Stegmeier said in announcing the totals. "The results are not official until after the county recanvass and then the Village Board meets to certify the final results."
A runoff election was scheduled after Schroeder and Santoro both received 248 votes during the regular village election March 19. In that balloting, Joseph Lista received 32 write-in votes. No write-ins were allowed in the runoff election.
