NORMAL (25News Now) - With no discussion, the Normal Town Council has unanimously approved a union contract with police that boosts pay 15% over four years for officers and sergeants, and includes provisions designed to recruit and keep officers on the force.

The agreement puts the starting salary for a new Normal Police officer at $70,613 in the first year of the contract, and it raises the starting salary to $77,140 when the deal expires in April of 2027.

Officers and sergeants represented by the Police Benevolent and Protective Association Unit 22 will receive a 6% increase the first year, a 5% hike in year two, with 2% increases in the third and fourth year of the agreement.

Using a state grant, the Town is paying a retention bonus of between $700 and $1,000 for each officer. Also, officers can now live within 60 miles compared to the current 25-mile limit.

Officers will receive 88 hours of paid time off per year, up from 72 hours, and they’ll get two additional holidays.

The cost to taxpayers in Normal for the first year of the agreement is an extra $450,000, according to the staff’s report.
