Houston police officers responded to 9700 Bertwood Street to assist Harris County deputies at 2:15 p.m.

Deputies said they initially responded to a suspicious person with two vehicles that were involved in an earlier altercation. When they arrived at the location, they saw one of the vehicles described in the incident.

Deputies first tried to pull over the grey Malibu with five people in it near FM 1960 and I-45 in northeast Harris County.

The driver wouldn’t stop, so they chased them over to Tidwell and Homestead where the car crashed into a ditch. The driver and three passengers got out and ran.

Deputies chased them on foot and detained two suspects after a short pursuit. The third suspect evaded but was caught by K9 and suffered a dog bite.

The fourth suspect got away from officers and is still on the run.

Police said the fifth suspect was armed and exchanged gunfire with two HCSO deputies. He was struck and pronounced dead at the hospital.

No officers or deputies were injured in the shooting.

A nearby elementary school, Shadydale Elementary, was placed on lockdown for a while but has since been lifted.

Houston police are leading the investigation since the crash happened in their territory.
