SPOKE WITH PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY áAND THE FAMILY WHO OWNED THE KANGAROO. WE HAVE VIDEO OF THE KANGAROO HOPPING DOWN THE ROAD. IT WAS TAKEN BY A MAN WHO HAS LIVED IN LIBERTY AREA NEAR ROLAND FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS. HE TELLS ME HE COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT HE WAS SEEING DURING HIS MORNING COMMUTE. á"This is what I'm following down the road"á A KANGAROO. á" in liberty Oklahoma"á A FAMILY'S PET ON THE LOOSE. THIS VIDEO WAS TAKEN AROUND 5 AM THIS MORNING NEAR ROLAND, OKLAHOMA, BUT MINUTES LATER... THE KANGAROO WAS HIT AND KILLED BY A DRIVER. <> "One of the deputies called me this morning" SEQUOYAH COUNTY SHERIFF LARRY LANE SAYS THE DEPUTY DROVE TO WHERE A KANGAROO WAS REPORTED. <> "the kangaroo jumped out of the wooded area into the highway and just as he was meeting another vehicle, the other vehicle struck the kangaroo. SHERIFF LANE SAYS THE DRIVER THOUGHT HE HIT A DEER. <> "the deputy said, "Well, that wasn't a deer." You know, come over here and look at it and he shined a light on it and it was a kangaroo...I guess the driver was pretty shocked." SHERIFF SAYS THEY WERE ABLE TO RETURN THE KANGAROO BACK TO THE OWNER. <> "I'm not sure how it got out of their property, but, you know, it's like a dog. You know, they get to get to be one of the part of the family, you know." THE SHERIFF SAYS THE DEPUTY PLACED THE KANGAROO IN HIS TRUCK HOPING TO FIND THE OWNER. AFTER A COUPLE HOURS, THE FAMILY CAME TO THE DEPUTY'S HOUSE TO PICK UP THEIR PET. I SPOKE WITH THE FAMILY BUT THEY SAY IT'S A TOUGH TIME AND DID NOT WANT TO COMMEN

Driver kills kangaroo on Oklahoma highway
A kangaroo was hit and killed by a car in Oklahoma early Wednesday morning, according to the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office. A deputy was patrolling north of Roland when he saw a kangaroo jump out of the woods and onto the highway. A passing vehicle hit it, killing the animal.The driver initially thought he had hit a deer and was shocked to learn it was a kangaroo, according to the sheriff's office.The video above was not taken by the driver who hit the kangaroo. It was taken by another man who lives in the Liberty area. A family later claimed the kangaroo's body, saying it had been their pet. "I'm not sure how it got out of their property, but, you know, it's like a dog," Sheriff Larry Lane. "You know, they get to be part of the family, you know."The family told 40/29 News they're having a tough time with their loss.
