Lorelei and more pets up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters this week

Arizona Republic

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Eisenhower: Pup cups and car rides will win his heart

Want to adopt Eisenhower? Please visit azhumane.org/adopt.

As more and more pets pour into our shelters, the Arizona Humane Society continues to see a rise of amazing adoptable pets sitting on the adoption floor longer than they should. A prime example of this is the adorable Eisenhower.

Although he is not sure what politics are, this cutie is named after the 34th President of the United States. The sweet eight-year-old American Bulldog has been under the care of AHS since he was found as a sick stray in November of last year. Rescued by one of AHS’ Emergency Animal Medical Technicians™, Eisenhower was underweight and covered in wounds.

Treated in the shelter’s trauma hospital for wounds and put on a feeding schedule to help him gain weight, the floppy-eared pup has made an incredible recovery and never lost his endearing spirit along the way. With being in the shelter for so long, he has made many friends, including the volunteers who have taken him on field trips all across the city — showing off his docile demeanor and love for car rides and pup cups. While still active, with an affinity for going on walks, Eisenhower also loves being a couch potato after a long day of sauntering around.

Interested adopters can meet the elegant Eisenhower at AHS’s South Mountain location. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information. Additionally, thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation, all dogs (including puppies) at all AHS locations have $0 adoption fees through Sunday, April 7.

Colonel Cabbage: She'll never say no to belly rubs

Want to adopt Colonel Cabbage? Please visit azhumane.org/adopt.

With a name as unique and adorable as Colonel Cabbage, it should be known that this pup truly is a gem prior to even getting to know her. The adorable three-year-old Pug was rescued by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ after she was found as an injured stray in March of this year.

Wandering the streets of Phoenix, this sweet pup was found with an extremely injured eye that was beyond saving. Because of this, Colonel Cabbage underwent surgery in AHS’ trauma hospital and has made a wonderful recovery. One of almost 22,000 sick, injured and abused pets that AHS cares for each year, Colonel Cabbage is a loving and energetic girl who will make a great companion for her future family.

With endless tail wiggles and little squeaks that show off how excited she is, the Colonel is not too caught up on order or rank but will never say no to belly rubs. Although she may leave a stray hair or 10 on your outfit, Colonel Cabbage loves laying in her favorite people’s laps and being held — after all, it is a lot of work being absolutely adorable.

Interested adopters can meet the cute Colonel Cabbage at AHS’ new Papago Park Campus. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information. Additionally, all dogs (including puppies) at all AHS locations have $0 adoption fees through Sunday, April 7, thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Lorelei: A cuddly explorer

If you're interested in Lorelei Black, please go to azfriends.org to fill out a consultation form.

Lorelei is a domestic, short-haired, spayed cat about one-year-old. She is a sweet and loving girl who can be shy at first, but her personality shines once she warms up to you. Once she is comfortable, she will greet you at the door with a welcome home meow and cuddle up to you at night. She enjoys playing and exploring the cat towers. She also likes boxes. In her foster home, she was introduced to other cats, and she did well but required a slow introduction. Lorelie would do just as well as an only cat. It's unknown how she would do with dogs. She has been exposed to some children and did well as long as they understand she is shy and needs time to adjust.

How to adopt: Loralei's adoption fee is $175.00. Friends for Life Animal Rescue is at 952 W. Melody Lane in Gilbert. To find out more about Lorelei, other cats, or dogs looking for homes, visit http://www.azfriends.org or call 480-497-8296.
