Socorro schools were on lockdown after reports of shots fired and threats

After reports of shots fired and threats, the Socorro school district placed several schools on lockdown and increased police presence on school campuses.

According to the spokesperson for the Socorro Independent School District, Campestre Elementary School, and surrounding schools, were placed on lockdown Wednesday at around noon after there were reports made of shots fired near the schools.

Police then reportedly secured and cleared the campuses and lifted the lockdown, according to the SISD spokesperson.

Nearby, several police officers also responded to an incident in Socorro High School where a student allegedly made threatening comments.

Viewer video from inside Socorro High appears to show what looks like a handcuffed student being escorted out by police, however, SISD didn't say if the student was arrested.

All schools are now open and continuing with their school day.

Below is a message the Principal of Socorro HS Dr. Ignacio Estorga sent out to parents informing them of the incident:

Hello, this is Dr. Ignacio Estorga, principal of Socorro High School. I am calling to inform you that there was a heavy police presence on our campus earlier this afternoon due to a report of a student who allegedly made threatening comments. District police promptly responded and addressed the student. There is no evidence of a viable threat to students or the campus. Students are continuing their day as normal. Thank you for your continued trust and support of Socorro High School and Team SISD.
