HOUSTON (KIAH) – Nestled in the heart of Texas Southern University’s campus lies the School of Communication (SOC). The building named after Martin Luther King Jr. has produced many talented professionals that have gone on to build successful careers in broadcast television, radio, print journalism, film and beyond.

Some managed to get their start by attending the SOC’s Communication Week. The weeklong event gives students an opportunity to have one-on-one introductions and career consultations with professionals, including Nexstar Media Group, Inc..

The 2024 event will be special because we are equally raising scholarship funds for gifted and economically disadvantaged students in the School of Communication. Traditionally, a majority of our students rely on some form of financial assistance to fund their education. This is why I am using this opportunity to appeal to individuals, corporate and community organizations to support this cause.

Nexstar Media Group, CW39 Houston’s parent company had the opportunity to attend its 42nd annual Intercultural and Communication Conference. This year’s theme is “Amplifying Diverse Voices in Media and Communication.”

On Tuesday, April 9, the SOC held its annual career fair where students were able to speak with CW39 Houston’s News Director Angel Covarrubias, Digital Media Manager for CW39 Houston Rachel Estrada, Meteorologist and Anchor Idolina Peralez and producer, reporter Paige Hubbard, who happens to be a proud TSU graduate.

The 2024 Texas Southern University (TSU) School of Communication (SOC) Career Day & Fair was a “major” success! As, the SOC Internship Coordinator, I want to thank all of the employers and our internship partners, including CW 39 (with the return of our Superstar SOC Graduate – Paige Hubbard) for your participation and for your passion for the successful matriculation of our SOC students. A special acknowledgment goes out to my colleagues in the SOC for all of your support. And a “super” shout out goes to my “favorite” keynote speaker, my wife, Dr. Nikki Duncan – University of Houston’s Director of Talent Acquisition and Development for sharing once again the importance of professional development and resumé preparation.
