Southside, Guntersville top Gadsden area high school soccer top 5 for week of April 10

With most Gadsden area high school boys and girls soccer teams taking spring break off there was little change in the Gadsden Times top 5 teams for boys and girls soccer this week.

Here's the top-5 teams, regardless of class in the Gadsden area, for results through March 2:

SPRING SPORTS: 42 Spring high school athletes to watch around Etowah county, Gadsden area

EDGE FAMILY: Father and son, Greg and Eli Edge enjoying final rounds together with Westbrook Christian Golf

Gadsden Times boys soccer top 5

1. Southside (19-1-1)

Last week: 1, 1-0

Why: A win over St. Clair County was enough for the Panthers to keep their top spot, the question still remains, is this the year they can bring it home?

2. Guntersville (17-1-1)

Last week: 2

Why: Guntersville earned a strong win over Westbrook Christian but a game against Boaz awaits.

3. Gadsden City (15-3-1)

Last week: 3, 0-1

Why: The Titans took down one of the top 6A teams in Mountain Brook, giving Etowah County bragging rights over the Spartans after Southside beat them earlier this season.

4. Susan Moore (14-2-1)

Last week: 4, 0-0-1

Why: The Bulldogs have been the class of Class 1A-3A so far this season, and a tie against Douglas won't change that or their rankings.

5. Boaz

Last week: NR, 2-0

Why: The best three teams in Class 5A, at least according to the coaches, are in the Gadsden area, and two of them play on Thursday in a big area game.

Dropped from rankings: Westbrook Christian (9-9-1)

Other teams considered: Collinsville (11-5-1), Glencoe (9-7)

Gadsden Times girls soccer top 5

1. Southside (19-5)

Last week: 2, 4-1 record

Why: Southside overtakes the Wildcats after a strong week with big wins over Fort Payne and St. Clair County.

2. Guntersville (16-3-2)

Last week: 1, 1-0-1

Why: The Wildcats earned a big win over Fairview before tying with Westbrook Christian, but slid due to the Panthers' success.

3. Jacksonville (14-3-1)

Last week: 3, 1-1

Why: A loss to Donoho in penalties in the county tournament and then a big win over White Plains helps the Golden Eagles stay in their spot in the rankings.

4. Westbrook Christian (12-4-2)

Last week: 5, 0-0-1

Why: The Warriors fought to a tie against the then-top ranked Wildcats and that helps them move up in the poll.

5. Gadsden City (7-5-2)

Last week: 4, 0-1

Why: The Titans lost big to Mountain Brook and it leads to a slide in the rankings.

Other teams considered: Collinsville (10-4-1), Glencoe (7-6-1)
