A teen was taken to a hospital after a North Side neighbor who was yelling racial slurs slammed the teen’s hand in a door, Madison police reported.
The man refused to talk to officers sent to an apartment building in the 3700 block of East Karstens Drive shortly before 11 p.m. on Thursday, police spokesperson Stephanie Fryer said in a statement.
A woman told police the man had been yelling racial slurs for a week and believed they were directed at her family. She tried talking to the man, but he continued to yell the slurs, Fryer said.

The man then confronted the woman, and a 17-year-old boy in the hallway of their building. During this incident, the man slammed his door against the teen's hand, Fryer said.
The department’s Hate Crime Task Force was notified about the incident, and there is probable cause to arrest the man, Fryer said, adding that the investigation is continuing.
