OZARK, Mo. — Ozark South Elementary has found an interactive way to teach their second-graders about economics.

From around 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, second-grade students at South Elementary held a grand opening for their one-day-only Economics Restaurant, inviting visitors to dine on hot dogs, chips and cookies.

The Economics Restaurant aims to teach students about budgets, finances, goods and services and what it’s like to have a job.

Payton Shelor, a second-grade teacher at Ozark South, also says the project will teach students about life skills such as responsibility.

“Responsibility is huge because we do have, like, my own kids are the cashiers,” said Shelor. “So they’re gonna be dealing with real money, so we’ve talked about responsibility with money.”

Each class will donate the money raised from the project to the charity of their choice. Shelor says her class will be giving their money to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
