HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – Two off-duty Wayne County deputies helped an Arkansas State Trooper arrest a suspect.

Wayne County Sheriff Chris Otey states that on April 4, at about 9 a.m., Lieutenant Rennie Cates and Corrections Corporal Dylan Toombs were traveling back to Illinois on Interstate 40 near West Memphis, Arkansas when they saw the trooper holding a vehicle at gunpoint.

Otey says the trooper had just forced the vehicle off the road and did not have backup. He also said the suspect would not comply and still did not surrender even after a K9 was deployed.

Otey states Cates and Toombs identified themselves as off-duty law enforcement, restrained the suspect, placed him into custody and secured him in the trooper’s squad car.

Otey says the trooper contacted him and praised Cates and Toombs and their actions, stating that he was by himself and when they showed up, he said “they were a sight for sore eyes.”

“I am very proud of Lt. Cates and Cpl. Toombs for their willingness to jump to action even when they are off duty and in another state,” Otey said on Facebook. “They have both been presented with a certificate of commendation for their bravery.”
