JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) - Some Jefferson County teachers got the recognition they deserve Tuesday night. The Board of Education named their elementary and secondary teachers of the year during an awards banquet.

It was a beautiful night filled with food and celebration, but it was even more special for two teachers in particular. The Jefferson County Teachers of the Year are Allyson McCombs of Warrior Elementary who is winner of the Elementary Division and Nastassia Law of Minor High School, who is the winner of the Secondary Division.

Both of the winners were given the ultimate honor for the dedication to their students and their love for teaching. Law says she’s where she’s supposed to be.

“I honestly don’t believe that anyone can thrive in education if it’s not a calling,” she says. “I feel that I operate in purpose. This is my assignment. This is truly what I’ve been called to do and that inspires me to go into my classroom everyday just as it did in the beginning.”

Each November, Jefferson County’s 57 schools nominate a teacher of the year for their campus. Ten finalists are chosen out of the 57, then it comes down to the two winners.

The five finalists for the elementary division include: Rene’ Robinson - Bryan Elementary School, Angela Lancaster - Burkett Center, Avery Wall - Grantswood Community School, Mary Jane Coker - McAdory Elementary School, Allyson McCombs - Warrior Elementary.

The five finalists for the secondary division include: Eugenia Denise Moore - Fultondale High School, Bonnie Wilson - Irondale Middle School, Nastassia Law - Minor High School, Robert Adams - Mortimer Jordan High School, Keith Brandenburg - Pinson Valley High School.
