FALL THIS SATURDAY. COMING UP. WE HAVE THE SPIKE. SPIKES HAVE BEEN HIT. TALK ABOUT TIMING. DID YOU SEE THAT RIGHT THERE? THIS VIDEO JUST IN TONIGHT OF PONCA CITY POLICE USING SPIKE STRIPS AND TIMING IT PERFECLY TO STOP A SUSPECTED CAR THIEF THIS MORNING WHO WAS CLOCKED DOING MORE THAN 100 MILES AN HOUR AND IT WAS A CHASE THAT SPED RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF TOWN. KOCO EVAN ONSTOT HERE IN STUDIO WITH US. EVAN, I UNDERSTAND ONE OFFICER WAS HURT WHEN THE SUSPECT CRASHED, AND FORTUNATELY, JUST A MINOR INJURY HERE. THEY SAY THAT HE ACTUALLY THE OFFICER WAS BACK ON THE JOB JUST HOURS LATER, BUT HE WAS HURT WHEN TWO POLICE CRUISERS COLLIDED WHEN THE SUSPECT’S CAR CRASHED INTO A POWER POLE, KNOCKING IT INTO THE ROAD. HERE’S THAT COLLISION ON BODY CAMERA. YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY. GET ON GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND! LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. GET ON THE GROUND! GO! MOVE! THAT ARREST AFTER POLICE SAY HE LED THEM ON A CHASE THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF PONCA CITY. POLICE SAY THAT THEY HAD TO USE THE SPIKE STRIPS BECAUSE THE SUSPECTED THIEF WAS BLOWING THROUGH STOP SIGNS AND RED LIGHTS REPEATEDLY. AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS EARLY TRAFFIC WAS ON THE ROAD FOR US. IT GETS TO THE POINT WHERE WE HAVE TO WEIGH RISK TO THE SUSPECT VERSUS RISK TO THE PUBLIC. AND AT THAT POINT, UM, BEING 530 IN THE MORNING WHEN YOU HAVE PEOPLE THAT ARE WAKING UP, COMING IN EARLY TO WORK OR TO GO TO THE GYM OR TO GO TO BREAKFAST OR WHATEVER, WE HAVE TO WEIGH WHAT’S BEST FOR OUR COMMUNITY IN TERMS OF SAFETY. After the suspect crashed, a police officer sustained a minor injury.The officer was already back on the job Tuesday, but he was hurt when two police cruisers collided as the suspect's car crashed into a power pole. Body camera video shows the moments the air bags deployed. "Get on the ground! Let me see your hands! Hands! Get on the (expletive) ground! Don't (expletive) move!" said an officer. Officers said they had to use spike strips since the driver was blowing through stop signs and red lights repeatedly. While it happened early in the morning, traffic was on the road. And at that point, being 5:30 in the morning and you have people waking up and coming in early to work, to the gym, to breakfast or whatever, we have to weigh what's best for our community in terms of safety," said Lt. Josh Henderson with the Ponca City Police Department. The suspect was just 16 years old. Police said it is early in their investigation, but they believe he is the same person who stole the car. He was taken into custody. The driver was clocked at traveling more than 100 mph, leading the chase through the middle of town. After the suspect crashed, a police officer sustained a minor injury.
