Tupelo starts week on high note

Apr. 5—TUPELO — After losing two out of three games at the Rattan Spring Classic, the Tupelo Tigers got off to a hot start this week.

The Tigers — ranked No. 3 in Class B — blanked Kiowa 6-0 on Monday and buried local foe Allen 15-1 on Tuesday to improve to 7-4 on the season.

Class B No. 5 Kiowa is sitting at 7-5 and the Allen Mustangs are 6-8.

Coach Clay Weller's bunch is competing in the 21st Annual Sean Hall Memorial Wood Bat Tournament in Atoka this weekend.

Tupelo 6, Kiowa 0

The Tigers scored two runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Two THS pitchers combined for the shutout. Aiden Walker got the start for the Tigers and struck out eight, walked three and allowed just four hits in 5.2 innings of work. Cash Wafford recorded the final four outs of the game. He struck out three, walked one and pitched around a pair of base hits.

"Our pitchers threw well, I felt good about how we played today as a group. It was a good team win," Weller said.

Luke Foreman and Walkup had two hits apiece to pace the THS offense. Foreman finished 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored and Walkup went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Taecyn Meek hit a double and drove in a run for the Tigers.

Cason Church led the six-hit Kiowa offense, going 3-for-4. Shooter Boatright added a pair of base hits for the Cowboys.

Boatwright absorbed the mound loss. He struck out three, walked three and allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Tupelo 15, Allen 1

The Tigers led just 3-0 after five innings before pulling away late. Tupelo scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it 8-0 and tacked on seven runs in the top of the seventh frame.

Davin Weller had a hot bat for the Tigers, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Tupelo piled up 10 total hits in the game.

Taecyn Meek went 2-for-4 and drove five runs for the Tigers and leadoff hitter Colton Bourland ended up 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. He was also hit by a pitch three times. Aiden Walkup went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored for the visitors.

Allen got a 2-for-3 effort by Emmett Koonche, who drove in the lone Mustang run. Garrett Nix and B Goodson also had base hits for the home team.

Davin Weller was the winning pitcher for Tupelo. He struck out six, didn't walk a batter and allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings. Kane Wilkerson tossed the final four frames for the Tigers. He struck out two, walked none and allowed one earned run and two hits.

Two Allen hurlers combined for nine walks and hit a whopping nine more batters.

Tupelo's lone win at the Rattan Spring Classic was a tense 3-2 win over Allen.
