PLAY. WELL, MORE TURMOIL IN THE SMALL CULLMAN COUNTY COMMUNITY AFTER THEIR MAYOR PLEADED GUILTY TO USING HIS OFFICE FOR PERSONAL GAIN. NOW, TWO OTHER LEADERS ARE LEAVING WVTM 13 LISA CRANE LIVE IN LOCAL IN HANCEVILLE. WHO’S LEAVING NOW? LISA. WELL, GUY IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD THE HANCEVILLE CHIEF AND ASSISTANT CHIEF BOTH ANNOUNCED THEIR DEPARTURE FROM THE SMALL HANCEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT. NOW THE INTERIM MAYOR, WHO’S ONLY BEEN IN THAT POSITION SINCE JANUARY. HE IS IN CHARGE OF FINDING THEIR REPLACEMENTS THIS THURSDAY. THE ASSISTANT CHIEF ASKED TO RETIRE ON FRIDAY MORNING. CHIEF HOWELL ASKED TO RESIGN INTERIM HANCEVILLE MAYOR JIM SAWYER HAS BEEN IN THIS DESK ONLY A FEW MONTHS NOW. THE RETIRED SERVICEMEN HAS SOME SERIOUS HIRING AHEAD OF HIM. YOU DON’T SEE THESE, UH, THESE SITUATIONS COMING WHEN YOU LOSE KEY PEOPLE. BUT WE JUST WE WE ALL GET TOGETHER, AND WE, ME AND THE CITY COUNCIL, AND WE’LL MAKE THOSE DECISIONS THAT KEEP US MOVING FORWARD. SAWYER, A LIFELONG HANCEVILLE RESIDENT AND LONGTIME COUNCIL MEMBER, MOVED INTO THIS POSITION IN JANUARY AFTER MAYOR KENNETH NAIL PLEADED GUILTY TO 15 COUNTS OF USING HIS POSITION FOR PERSONAL GAIN, A SHOCK FOR THIS SMALL COMMUNITY. NOW, THE ALMOST 3500 HANCEVILLE RESIDENTS HAVE MORE CHANGES TO DEAL WITH. More turmoil in a small Cullman County community after their mayor pleaded guilty to using his office for personal gain.Now two other leaders are leaving. In a 24-hour period, the Hanceville chief and assistant chief announced their departures from the small Hanceville Police Department. Now the interim mayor, Jim Sawyer, who just took over in January is working to replace these two key positions.Sawyer says, "Thursday, the assistant chief asked to retire. Friday morning, Chief Howell asked to resign."Sawyer has been in this desk only a few months. Now the retired serviceman has some serious hiring ahead of him. He says, "You don't see these situations coming when you lose key people. But we just all get together. We, me and the city council, and we'll make those decisions that keep us moving forward."Sawyer, a lifelong Hanceville resident and longtime council member, moved into this position after Mayor Kenneth Nail pleaded guilty to 15 counts of using his position for personal gain. It was a shock for this small community. Now the almost 3,500 Hanceville residents have more changes to deal with. Sawyer says, "I think it's always difficult, you know, stepping in where things have taken place like they have. But like I say, I've got a lot of good people to help me.
