Emmy Predictions via Feinberg Forecast: Updated Picks as ‘Shogun’ Ends (Or Does It?), ‘Hacks’ Begins (Again) and ‘Expats’ Star Nicole Kidman Is Feted

SINCE THE LAST UPDATE

With the May 31 Emmys eligibility cutoff almost exactly one month away, Emmys-related action is picking up.

More from The Hollywood Reporter

On April 22, Ryan Seacrest, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan came out for a screening and reception in Hollywood on behalf of ABC’s American Idol. Meanwhile, in New York, Peter Morgan, creator and principal writer of Netflix’s The Crown, was feted at the opening of his new Broadway play Patriots. And that same night, FX’s Shōgun had a well-received series — or season? — finale. (The following evening its lead actress, Anna Sawai, sat down with yours truly at Chapman University to record an episode of THR’s Awards Chatter podcast.)

On April 24, Max toasted the third season of Hacks (which debuts on May 2) with a party at the Chateau Marmont attended by the show’s creators and stars, including Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. And at the same time, across town, Netflix hosted a Q&A with the stars of Girls5Eva.

Meanwhile, on April 25, The Food Network hosted a big FYC gathering in Hollywood with Guy Fieri promoting his shows Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Tournament of Champions. Concurrently, several contenders — Mark Cuban (ABC’s Shark Tank), Alex Edelman (HBO/Max’s Alex Edelman: Just for Us) and Maya Rudolph (Apple’s Loot) — attended the Time100 Gala in New York, having been included on TIME‘s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

On April 27, Nicole Kidman, star of Amazon’s Expats, was presented with the AFI Life Achievement Award in Hollywood at a ceremony that also drew that show’s creator Lulu Wang and costar Ji-young Yoo, as well as Meryl Streep (Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building), Naomi Watts (FX’s Feud: Capote vs. the Swans) and Joey King (Hulu’s We Were the Lucky Ones).

Simultaneously, in Washington, D.C., Colin Jost (NBC’s Saturday Night Live) hosted the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, receiving solid reviews. Other contenders in attendance included Jost’s wife, Scarlett Johansson (a potential guest actress nominee for the same show for her impersonation of U.S. Sen. Kate Britt), as well as Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun), Molly Ringwald (FX’s Feud: Capote vs. the Swans), Rufus Sewell (Netflix’s Scoop), Rosario Dawson (Disney+’s Ahsoka) and Wilson Cruz (Paramount+’s Star Trek: Discovery).

The week also brought a flurry of announcements that could offer hints about the race.

The Peabody Awards on April 23 revealed its nominees in documentary, news, public service and radio/podcast categories, and the doc field included HBO/Max’s docuseries Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning.

On April 25, the organization announced its nominees in arts, children’s/youth, entertainment, interactive and immersive categories, and entertainment nominees included FX’s The Bear and Reservation Dogs, Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai and HBO/Max’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.

And on April 28, the Brits weighed in with their BAFTA Television Craft Awards, winners of which included Netflix’s Black Mirror (best drama writer, photography & lighting: fiction) and Apple’s Slow Horses (editing: fiction and sound: fiction) and Silo (original music: fiction and production design).

In terms of pre-determined accolades, the Webby Awards disclosed on April 23 that Jerrod Carmichael of HBO/Max’s unstructured reality program The Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show has been tapped for a special achievement award for outstanding comedic performance. And April 25 brought both the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ picks for its annual Television Academy Honors (Showtime’s doc/nonfiction special hopeful Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court was among the programs singled out) and the Critics Choice Association’s selection of honorees for its inaugural Celebration Of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television, which will take place during Pride Month on June 7.

Among those set to be feted at the latter: Nathan Lane (HBO/Max’s The Gilded Age) with a career achievement award; Abe Sylvia (Apple’s Palm Royale) with the showrunner award; Carl Clemons-Hopkins (HBO/Max’s Hacks) with the TV supporting performance award; Chris Perfetti (ABC’s Abbott Elementary) with the breakthrough performance award; Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Loot) with the vanguard award; Oliver Hermanus (Starz’s Mary & George) with the director award; Ron Nyswaner, Matt Bomer, Daniel Minahan and Robbie Rogers (Showtime’s Fellow Travelers) with the producer award; and the team behind RuPaul’s Drag Race (MTV) with the trailblazer award.

And on April 25, we learned that Disney+’s Ron Howard-directed doc/nonfiction special Jim Henson Idea Man will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, ahead of its May 31 streaming debut, as part of the Cannes Classics section.

This week, Emmy-watchers should mark their calendars for the premieres of the aforementioned Hacks, as well as Hulu’s The Veil (April 30), Netflix’s Unfrosted (May 3) and a host of Netflix content that will debut at the streamer’s Netflix Is a Joke Festival (between May 1 and May 12), including the highly anticipated G.R.O.A.T. The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady (May 5).

Stay tuned!

NOTE BEFORE READING FURTHER

(1) This forecast, assembled by The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor of awards coverage Scott Feinberg, reflects Scott’s best attempt to predict the behavior of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, not his personal preferences.

(2) Unlike many other lists, the objective of the forecast is not to include every show or person that is eligible for Emmys recognition, only the top tier of contenders.

(3) Nobody can watch every Emmy-eligible show, and Scott is no exception. He arrives at these projections by at least sampling as many contenders as possible, consulting with TV Academy members, reading reviews, analyzing awards campaigns and referencing the results of other award shows, as well as the historical preferences of the TV Academy.

(4) Under program categories, you can now find listed each program’s season that is eligible, its platform, release date (of the first episode of the eligible season) and Rotten Tomatoes scores (the first from critics, the second from audiences). We also note if the TV Academy has recognized prior seasons of the program in that category with a nomination (*) or award (^).

(5) The forecast will be updated regularly to reflect new developments. We encourage you to bookmark and return to this URL to find the latest update. (Older versions will be preserved and linked to at the bottom.)
