RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Two people have been identified in a Rapid City crash that happened Tuesday night.

28-year-old Zachary Vermeulen of and 24-year-old Andrew Smith both of of Rapid City were killed when the SUV they were in crashed into an apartment building.

A third person was transported to Monument Health with life-threatening injuries. His or her name is not available at the time.

The SUV was traveling southbound on Haines Avenue and lost control, crossed into the northbound lanes, exited the roadway and struck an apartment at 420 Philadelphia Street around 10:40.

Witnesses say the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed just before the crash.

When the SUV struck the apartment, it severed a gas line and caused a gas leak that reached dangerous and explosive levels. First responders evacuated 50 residents from the building.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Rapid City Police Department, Rapid City Fire Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.

There are false reports circulating that police were pursuing the vehicle prior to the collision. Police were not in pursuit of the vehicle. The first point of contact with the vehicle by police was the emergency response after the crash.
