More than 1,500 guns found at airport security checkpoints so far this year

Officials said 93% of those weapons were found to be loaded.

INDIANAPOLIS — There are startling numbers being reported about the number of guns found at airport security checkpoints this year.

In just the first three months of 2024, the Transportation Security Administration said they intercepted more than 1,500 guns.

That's an average of nearly 17 guns a day and 93% of those weapons were found to be loaded, officials said.

The nationwide numbers are on par with the first quarter of last year.

In Indianapolis, TSA seized 18 firearms during the first quarter, including one in a carry-on bag discovered during an x-ray screening earlier this week.

Traveling with a gun is allowed, but the TSA says it must be packed unloaded in checked baggage and declared at the ticket counter.
