A deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department shot and killed a man who drove toward him during a detainment attempt overnight, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Deputies were dispatched to the 1500 block of North Herbert Avenue in Los Angeles just before midnight on Saturday on reports of a domestic violence incident. Authorities said the suspect, who assaulted a victim, left the scene in a green van.

The van was found driving on the 3900 block of Snow Drive, where deputies attempted a traffic stop and exited their vehicle, holding the man at gunpoint.

The man made a U-turn, officials claim, and drove toward one of the deputies, who then opened fire at the man.

The deputy was hospitalized from an injury sustained in the confrontation, although the extent wasn’t immediately made clear. No other injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s department didn’t reveal any other details. Per protocol with a enforcement involved shooting, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division will investigate the lawfulness of the use of lethal force.
