Deputy shoots man who charged at them with knife after damaging neighbor's home, HCSO says

Deputies said there had been 54 calls for service to the man's home, and the man may have been having a mental crisis.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man was shot by a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy Wednesday after he was accused of charging at the deputy with a knife and damaging his neighbor's home.

This happened on Braydon Bend Drive near Jackrabbit and West Road in northwest Harris County.

HCSO Assistant Chief Tommy Diaz said at about 12:05 p.m., deputies were called after neighbors heard what they thought were gunshots at their house.

When deputies arrived, they found the windows of the neighbor's home were broken as well as the windows to their vehicles, but deputies couldn't tell if the windows were shot or damaged in another way.

Deputies were told that a 61-year-old man caused the damage. HCSO said they were very familiar with him because there have been 54 calls for service to his home since Jan. 1. Those calls for service include mental health calls and weapons disturbance calls, some of which the man called in himself.

The man had barricaded himself inside his house. Though he was alone at the time, deputies got permission to go inside from someone else who lives there, Diaz said.

When deputies entered the home, they said the suspect had barricaded himself in a bathroom with a knife. Deputies called for a crisis management team to help get the man out, but before the team arrived, the man walked out of the bathroom. He then allegedly threatened a deputy before lunging at him, Diaz said.

A second deputy pulled out his gun and shot the man once in the torso area.

The man was flown to Memorial Hermann but we don't know his condition. No deputies were injured.

It's unknown if there was a feud between the man and his neighbor that would cause him to damage their property.

Homicide detectives are investigating. Internal affairs is handling its own investigation to see if policies were followed.

The deputy who fired a shot is a 12-year-old veteran who is 38 years old.
