Columbia housing officials are going public with their plan to address the need for affordable housing in the region Tuesday afternoon.

A lack of housing continues to be an issue in the area and they’re hoping this will be a step in the right direction.

Columbia housing officials showed a huge focus on future planning in the midlands.

They broke down their main focal points to who Columbia houses, where they are housed, and what services will be offered to those families.

With more developments like Oaks at St. Anna’s Park coming to Columbia, housing officials are alarming a major issue for many families in their care.

In the past year Columbia Housing was awarded more than $100,000 in federal funding for their family self-sufficient program.

Through the program 100 families struggling with food insecurity were given weekly meals.

Officials are also working to get more people adequate housing through what’s known as their rad rehab project.

Columbia Housing will be utilizing more than 500 homes for people in need but some in attendance, like Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, worry that some of the land is not being used to its fullest potential.

The annual plan still needs to be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
