Man found fatally shot behind north Birmingham church is city’s 6th homicide in 6 days

A man was found shot to death late Monday behind a north Birmingham church, just one block from Legion Field.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified the victim as Eric Savoy Brown. He was 33 and lived in Birmingham.

The city’s gunfire detection system - Shot Spotter - registered 13 rounds near Center Street and Sixth Avenue West. While they were en route, the call was updated to a report of a person shot.

Officers arrived to the find the victim unresponsive on the ground. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Brown dead on the scene at 10:;28 p.m. in a grassy area behind Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said evidence indicates the shooting started at Graymont Avenue and Center Street.

“It appears the victim ran one block, to Sixth Avenue West and Center Street and collapsed there,’’ she said.

It’s possible the fatal shots were fired from a vehicle. No arrests have been made.

Brown is Birmingham’s sixth homicide in six days.

On Tuesday, April 9, two people- including a teen - were shot to death in separate incidents.

Longtime UPS driver Anthony Lamar Love Jr., 44, was gunned down in a targeted attack in the parking lot of the company’s Custom Care center and distributed warehouse. He had just finished his shift and was walking to his vehicle. No arrests have been made.

Jaylin Jenkins, 16, was killed a couple of hours later when he drove to a neighborhood store to buy a Coke. An argument took place and police he was chases and fired on as he tried to get away. A juvenile has been charged.

Nakita “Kita” Davidson, a 40-year-old mother of four, was abducted, shot and left for dead early Thursday, April 11. Her body was found the following day, and her boyfriend has been charged with capital murder.

Late Friday/early Saturday, 26-year-old Jeffry Padilla was found slain in 500 block of 81st Street South after police receiving a Shot Spotter alert of one round fired in the area. He was discovered face down in the front yard of a residence.

No arrests have been announced.

Late Saturday, Christopher Deandre Coleman, a 41-year-old owner of his own towing company, was found shot dead outside his tow truck on the city’s west side. He was backed into a vacant house. He was the owner of Coleman’s Towing, and a father and grandfather.

“It’s sad that whatever conflict that anybody’s having that it can’t be resolved through conversation instead of resorting to gun violence,’' Wade said.

Monday night’s victim is Birmingham’s 41st homicide this year. Of those, four have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
