A pair of men's Teva Hurricane XLT 2 sandals on a wooden table

Travel + Leisure / Jason Horn

The right footwear can make or break a trip, and sandals, especially, can be a tricky fit. Finding the right pair — whether it’s for a walking safari in Africa or a walk on the beach — can leave you feeling more than a little like Goldilocks. Some are too big, some are too small, some chafe too much, some don’t have enough support — it’s maddening!

But when you find the right pair, there’s nothing better. The best sandals are ones that allow your feet to breathe and pack easily in your suitcase, but don’t compromise on comfort, support, and, of course, style.

To help you make the best selection, Travel + Leisure tested over 100 sandals for comfort, fit, durability, and value, putting them through a battery of tests. After strapping them on, taking them out for a spin, and traversing different terrains, the winners were clear. Read on to find the ones that scored best in our tests.

Why We Love It
  • The podiatrist-designed footbed offers three zones of comfort.

What to Consider
  • The upper is made from synthetic leather which won’t mold to your feet as well as real leather would.

We loved these sandals so much we found ourselves wearing them all the time. And while this pair felt a little heavy at first, the weight quickly became barely noticeable. That’s because what we perceived as extra weight was actually a durable, podiatrist-designed footbed that offers far more support and comfort than what you’d get with a typical flip-flop.

We loved how easy they were to slide on and off and how they hugged our feet with support throughout the day, never flying off by accident. We also appreciated how they didn’t require using our hands to slide them on. However, the key factor which helped this pair score so well was its supportive arch — a feature that many flip-flops lack. Overall, these are a pretty unassailable pair of flip-flops that will take you wherever you need to go.

Why We Love It
  • The sturdy sole will last for many adventures to come.

What to Consider
  • We found them to be slightly stiff and uncomfortable.

This Teva shoe has a cult following for its comfortable, soft, and adjustable webbing straps, and its incredibly durable sole which we found to be extremely sturdy. It’s designed with a grippy exterior that stays put even in the most slippery environments, so you can step with confidence whether you’re on a walking tour in a city or scrambling over wet rock faces in the Pacific Northwest. The quick-dry webbing is made from recycled plastic that uses only traceable, verified REPREVE polyester yarns, so you can rest assured that this pair will last, and that you’re minimizing your carbon footprint.

Why We Love It
  • The price-to-durability ratio is pretty tough to beat.

What to Consider
  • These run large — we suggest sizing down one full size when you order.

Most people know Crocs for their immediately recognizable clogs, and these flip-flops are crafted from that same thermoplastic EVA that fans of the brand know and love. We loved how lightweight the material is, offering all-day comfort so we never felt like our feet were dragging. They’re technically designed to be a water sandal, so even when you wear these in the wettest environments, you can count on them to dry in a jiffy.

Why We Love It
  • The toe post is made from soft nylon for total comfort.

What to Consider
  • We needed to order a full size larger than our typical size.

The design of these OluKai sandals is just gorgeous — from the top stitching to the subtle logo to the wave-like sole. As soon as you slip these on, you’re transported to an island state of mind. We enjoyed the soft and smooth feel of the shoe’s sole and strap, but appreciated that the outsole was still grippy. During our tests, we much preferred these to a typical flip-flop.

Why We Love It
  • The sole offers support while remaining lightweight.

What to Consider
  • There may be a small break-in period.

Chaco supporters love this brand for their signature straps, which hug the top of your foot in a way that feels secure but never chafes. While the design differs on this flip-flop, you can expect the same support as the brand’s typical sandals. The bottom of this sandal has an added 3-millimeter lug outsole for exceptional traction, and they’re made with Chaco’s signature “Luvseat” underfoot arch support. We found the straps to be the perfect width to offer support without feeling clunky, and the low-profile design keeps this pair lightweight and packable.

Why We Love It
  • This sandal offers a ton of soft, pillowy support.

What to Consider
  • While this is a practical choice, the design feels a little lacking.

Who doesn’t love a little extra cushion? It’s tough to beat the pillowy foam sole on this pair from Sanuk, which utilizes a nylon webbing toe post for total comfort, as well as a soft neoprene lining that’s a dream to wear, and dries quickly in wet environments. This Southern California brand uses all-natural, vegan, and recycled materials, and draws its name from the Thai word for “fun," which wearing these certainly was.

Why We Love It
  • This sandal offers unbeatable comfort, support, and a great range of colors.

What to Consider
  • The logo peels off after some use.

What is it about that Adidas tri-stripe logo that just feels so cool? Not only does this pair embody the brand’s sporty-cool ethos, but they’re fantastically comfortable underfoot. While we noticed that there aren’t a lot of fancy ergonomic features with these flip flops, the slight dip at the toes, supportive heel bed, and smooth overall cradling kept these feeling comfortable. After wearing them extensively during testing, we experienced zero chafing, zero soreness, zero blisters, or any other signs of discomfort. For a reliable, comfortable pair of men's sandals, this is a great choice.

Why We Love It
  • Few leather sandals can compete with the comfort of Reefs over time.

What to Consider
  • They’re a bit heavy.

It’s all about the leather on this classic pair of Reef sandals. It’s soft, supple, and molds to the shape of your foot for a unique fit which only gets more comfortable over time. What makes Reef’s leather unique is that its construction and treatment minimize any break-in time. After just a few hours with this pair, we noticed they were already starting to mold to our feet. For those laid-back, “had these forever” vibes, this is the pair for you.

Why We Love It
  • This pair has a replaceable Vibram outsole and a unique adjustable Y-strap design.

What to Consider
  • We suggest sizing up one half size, and using the Y-straps to find the perfect fit right from the beginning.

In searching for the preeminent hiking sandals, we were especially excited to test this pair, as they have an amazing reputation as the best of the best. The quality of materials here is second to none, with a Vibram outsole (that can be replaced if you wear it out), a unique Y-strap design that hugs your foot and never chafes, and a minimalist footbed that molds to your feet over time for excellent ground feel and flexibility. And for all the comfort and support this pair provides, they are still remarkably lightweight, and can be easily packed into your luggage — a winning combination that makes them a fantastic hiking companion.

Why We Love It
  • The brand’s signature LUVSEAT PU footbed provides all the arch support you need.

What to Consider
  • It takes a little finessing to adjust the straps just right.

Chaco has perfected the art of the minimalist hiking sandal, with reliable and grippy soles and a signature strap system that has earned them legions of fans. We loved how well the straps fit, but did note that it took some maneuvering to get them adjusted properly at first. These are fantastic hiking sandals, and are especially well-suited for those with high arches. The brand’s signature LUVSEAT footbed is made from a sturdy PU (considerably sturdier than EVA foams) and keeps your arches secure and comfortable on even the longest hikes.

Other Men’s Sandals We Liked

Two sandals we tested didn’t quite earn a spot on our list of the very best, but still had standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal: These sandals offer just the right amount of heft and support without being bulky. They’re functional for hiking in a variety of environments, and the hook-and-loop style velcro straps allow for a snug but not too tight fit. However, we found the arch support to be more than what we needed which was hard to get used to at first.

Ecco Men’s Yucatan Sandal: We wore this sandal for a number of different hikes in various wet and dry environments, and appreciated their comfort and stability. They do run small, though, so if you’re between sizes, try ordering up.

Our Testing Process

We sourced products for this roundup from three separate tests, in total testing over 100 products for a period of six months. We scored each sandal based on comfort, fit, durability, and value. To examine each sandal in a real-life setting, we looked at each sandal closely when we initially took them out of their box, then tested them for both shorter and longer periods of wear, on multiple types of terrain. With those tests in mind, the highest-scoring sandals were selected.

Tips for Buying Men’s Sandals

Prioritize comfort and support

The whole premise of a sandal is that it allows for more breathability around the foot, so you can traverse different terrains without feeling like your feet are constricted. That said, a sandal hugs your foot very differently than a shoe, so it’s important to prioritize comfort and make sure none of the contact points are overly tight or chafing. However, you don’t want to go so minimalistic that the sandal doesn’t offer any support, or you’ll be sacrificing functionality. The most basic flip flops, for example, offer little to no support, and aren’t designed to do much more than take you on a short walk to the pool and back.

“One of the aspects that makes sandals unique is adjustability,” said Anders Bergstrom, Vice President and Global General Manager of Teva Footwear. “With some rare exceptions, sandals are likely to fit better than many shoes… My only advice would be to avoid getting a pair that’s too big, a bit smaller is better if you’re in between sizes.”

Consider your activity and destination

When looking for the right sandals for men, consider where you’re going and how you’ll be wearing them. If you just need shoes for a cruise to wear from your room over to the pool deck, you can get away with something very lightweight that takes up minimal space in your suitcase. But if this is something you’re going to be wearing for long days of sightseeing spent on your feet, then you’ll want to have more cushion and support. Also, keep in mind your destination — sandals might be more appropriate to wear to a restaurant in Hawaii, for example, than they are to a restaurant in Paris.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can I wear sandals if I have flat feet?

“Yes,” said Bergstrom. “But flat-footed people should avoid basic constructions like EVA flip flops and opt for a more supportive and structured product.” Doing that will give your foot’s architecture the support it needs so you remain comfortable all day long.

  • What kind of sandals are good for hiking and walking?

Get something with a strap that secures the sandal to your foot and offers support, but doesn’t pinch or chafe. The fit should be secure, but not tight. And avoid super lightweight EVA foam soles; those don’t offer the support your feet will need for longer hikes and walks.
