Alleged dog hoarders make bail

From Mirror staff reports

A couple charged with hoarding nearly 100 animals in their Bedford County home are out on bail.

Nyal Piper, 81, had his $1 million bail reduced to $250,000 on March 27. On Monday, a professional bail bondsman posted Piper’s bail and he was released from the Bedford County Correctional Facility.

His wife Renee, 63, also had her bail reduced March 27 and she was released April 4 after it was posted.

The duo are each facing nearly 500 charges after more than 90 animals — including dogs, cats and a turtle — were rescued from their home on New Year’s Eve.

The animals were living in deplorable conditions, many locked in crates stacked to the ceiling, police said. The animals were filthy and malnourished and had little to no food and water, according to court documents, which also stated several of the dogs had to be euthanized due to their condition.

All charges against the two have been waived for court. Each faces 99 felony charges of aggravated cruelty to animals – torture, eight felony charges of aggravated cruelty to animals – causing serious bodily injury or death, 99 misdemeanor charges of neglect of animals – sustenance/water, 99 misdemeanor charges of neglect of animals – vet care, 99 misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and 81 summary charges of failure to keep licensed dog.

Court documents show that Nyal Piper is being represented by Duncansville attorney Thomas Dickey, while Renee Piper is represented by Shawn Cohen, also of Duncansville.
