Mounted police clip-clopped their way to High Fest on Saturday — a tamer block party than in past years.
Primarily, there were a few house parties on High Street, nothing over the top. On Sunday, remnants of High Fest and Congo Fest — which occurred Friday on Congress Street — could be seen as cups and empty bottles sat on ledges and bed sheets painted with greetings hung off of porch roofs.
Athens Service-Safety Director Andrew Stone shared some statistics that indicate that the annual block party was smaller.
As to crowd size, Stone said Athens Police Chief Nick Magruder indicated it was the smallest he has seen since he started working at APD in 2010.
Stone said Athens Police made no arrests, Ohio Investigative Unit (Liquor Control) issued a citation and there was a litter citation from Athens Code Enforcement. He said nothing unusual happened during the block party.
Athens EMS Chief Amber Pyle said EMS was not needed at the event.
During High Fest weekend 2023, the Ohio Investigative Unit arrested a total of 20 individuals with 37 offenses, according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Stone said this year’s fest season has been quiet so far — probably because of the weather, which has been rainy, cold and cloudy. During Mill Fest in late March, EMS took one person to the hospital and five more partygoers were treated at the scene. Like last year, it was cold and rainy, so the crowds didn’t develop or grow much as they had in years past.
Palmer Fest is scheduled for Saturday — the last big party of Fest season.
