American Red Cross assisting 14 people after York fire damages six homes; number could rise

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – The American Red Cross is assisting 14 people, including 12 adults and two children, following a three-alarm fire involving six residences on Sunday night in York.

The Red Cross says they are continuing to take calls from people impacted by the fire. Anyone in need of assistance can contact them 1-800-RED CROSS.

Crews responded to the 500 block of North Pershing Ave. shortly before 7 p.m. and found four units on fire. Two additional structures caught fire while crews were on scene.

Officials say one person was rescued from a basement shortly after crews arrived to heavy smoke filling the residential neighborhood. That person was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be okay.

Photos showed flames coming from one of the structure’s windows.

The extent of the damage remains unclear at this time, however, images on social media showed at least one roof collapse.

The Red Cross has responded to the scene and it’s unclear how many people have been impacted.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
