ST. LOUIS — A federal judge sentenced a man Tuesday to 27 years in prison for three St. Louis carjackings, including one that turned fatal when he ran over a 72-year-old victim.
Carmain Milton, 50, was accused of stealing three cars over seven days in September 2021 while threatening people with a pellet gun that looked like a real gun. One of those encounters, on Sept. 18, 2021, turned fatal, however, when he ran over Chen-Hsyong Yang, of Brentwood, while stealing his Honda Element.
Milton was initially charged in state court with Yang's death, but a grand jury refused to indict him, and a judge dismissed the charges when federal authorities filed their own case.
Milton pleaded guilty in January to two counts of carjacking and one count of carjacking resulting in death.
In court on Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cassandra Wiekman said Milton's violent behavior was the culmination of 30 years of criminal conduct, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
