Why are you running for office?

My campaign for Congress is deeply rooted in gratitude and service to a state and country that have given me everything. From starting at a gas station in Baltimore to completing my PhD and dedicating years to teaching in public schools, my journey embodies the American dream.

My office has been a lifeline for minorities, aiding bereaved families, assisting immigrant families through federal partnerships, and tackling local issues. My legislative successes across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and climate change, underscore my commitment to this community and readiness to serve in Congress.

This campaign is a continuation of my service and a tribute to a state and nation that have offered me boundless opportunities. I leverage my unique experiences and achievements to advocate for inclusive policies and provide effective support. Propelled by a deep-seated desire to give back to the land that has shaped my story, I am ready to represent our community in Congress.

Do you believe, as President Joe Biden has said, that “democracy is on the ballot” and, if so, in what way?

President Joe Biden is right. Democracy is on the ballot. The fragility of our democratic institutions has been laid bare. And it is vital to safeguard them. From spreading misinformation to undermining trust in our government, the democratic ideals that have long been our nation’s cornerstone are at risk.

This isn’t merely about political disagreements, January 6th was a turning point, a stark reminder of what is at stake.; it’s a moment that veers away from our foundational values, promoting exclusion over inclusion, skepticism over science, and division over unity.

In these critical times, our commitment to democracy, education, environmental stewardship, and the rule of law is paramount. The upcoming election is more than a choice between candidates; it’s an opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to these principles. We must move forward with a vision that embraces our nation’s diversity and resilience, ensuring that democracy remains vibrant and strong for future generations.

Will you accept the presidential election result once the totals have been certified by the states and any legal challenges adjudicated?

I wholeheartedly believe in the integrity of our election system and the fairness of our judicial process. The peaceful transition of power based on the people’s will, as expressed through free and fair elections, is the foundational bedrock of our democracy. I will fully accept the outcomes once the states certify the election results and any legal challenges are thoroughly adjudicated.

This commitment reflects my unwavering faith in the principles that have guided our nation since its inception. Trust in our electoral and judicial systems is paramount. As we all should, I stand ready to honor the election results in the spirit of unity and respect for our democratic institutions.

Do you support additional assistance for Ukraine’s military forces two years into Russia’s invasion?

Continuing our support for Ukraine’s military forces is imperative, even two years into the conflict with Russia. Our commitment to aiding nations in need is a testament to our values and is crucial in maintaining the global geopolitical balance. Our assistance’s strength and reliability send a powerful message: that aggressive actions by larger powers will not go unchecked.

Without the steadfast support of nations like ours, we risk emboldening countries such as Russia to undermine the sovereignty of smaller states further. Aiding Ukraine is not just about upholding international norms, deterring aggression, and ensuring a stable, secure world order. Our support for Ukraine is a clear stand for democracy against the unwarranted expansion of authoritarian regimes.

Should the United States be speaking out more clearly, as Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen has suggested, about civilian casualties in Gaza?

I deeply respect Senator Chris Van Hollen’s foreign policy expertise and unwavering dedication to democracy at home and globally. As he said, it’s vital for the U.S. to maintain its role in advocating for human dignity.

His insistence on the U.S. denouncing civilian harm in conflict zones underscores thoughtful diplomacy and commitment to humanitarian efforts. He unequivocally condemns the violence perpetrated by Hamas against civilians in Israel, calling for an end to terrorism. I believe that the US plays a crucial role in promoting human rights and democracy. I believe that we must navigate the complex geopolitical landscape towards stability, peace, and justice, reflecting the core American values of human rights and democracy on the global stage.

I trust Senator Van Hollen’s wisdom in advocating for the United States to articulate more clearly its stance on civilian casualties in Gaza as an essential step towards safeguarding human rights and fostering peace.

Should Congress act to protect abortion rights following the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision?

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision, Congress must take action to protect abortion rights. This decision has, unfortunately, set reproductive rights back by decades in the United States. We must ensure people have access to the healthcare they need. This ruling has led to restrictions on essential medical procedures like IVF in Alabama, which I oppose. Decisions regarding our citizens’ health and lives must be grounded in science and empirical evidence.

As a member of the Health and Government Operations Committee, I was proud to support and actively advocate to enshrine abortion rights in our state’s constitution. Our efforts aimed to ensure Maryland continues to serve as a beacon of inclusivity, rights protection, and healthcare access, countering the regressive trends observed in several other states.

Constituents are increasingly expressing concern about suburban crime. What more can the federal government do to help?

I believe we need an approach that combines mental health support, targeted federal funding for crime reduction, and substantial investment in education.

Access to mental health treatments and effective recovery programs is critical, as these can substantially decrease crime rates by supporting individuals prone to criminal behavior.

As a member of the legislature I have strongly advocated for the targeted application of funds, ensuring they are dedicated solely to initiatives promoting safer communities.

While addressing crime head-on we need to improve schools and allocate resources to educational institutions. Enhancing educational environments and providing adequate school resources are vital measures to prevent crime by offering young people opportunities for personal and academic growth. Investing in education contributes to the development of well-rounded individuals who are less likely to engage in criminal activities, thereby addressing another foundational cause of crime.

How would you rate outgoing Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger’s performance over 21 years in office? And how would you compare or contrast it with your approach?

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger’s 21-year tenure in Congress is marked by a sincere dedication to healthcare, infrastructure, and climate change policies, sets a high standard for impactful public service. Inspired by his pragmatic approach and exceptional constituent service, my political journey from an educator in Nepal to a legislator in Maryland has been driven by a commitment to community needs, underscored by bipartisan, informed leadership.

My legislative tenure, especially during the challenging COVID-19 era, echoes Congressman Ruppersberger’s ethos. I’ve contributed to passing close to two dozen bills in the Maryland General Assembly, focusing on critical issues such as economic growth, healthcare reform, and education improvements.
