JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - Middle school students competed at a Civics Bee in Jackson.

The students discussed their civics essay for the competition and answered questions about government. Students who achieved high scores received cash prizes and qualified for the state tournament in Lansing.

Lots of students participate in sports practices and clubs after school.

It is uncommon for students to pursue research and academics beyond classroom requirements, as they did for the civics competition.

“Everything they did and all of the hard work they did was just simply amazing,” said Lumen Christi Teacher Dick Cooper. “Like I said, all I did was just give them some information, and they ran with it.”

Students from various schools in Jackson County participated in the Civics Bee.

Dick Cooper, a teacher at Lumen Christi Catholic School, reported that three of his students finished in the top five, with two qualifying for the state competition.

“The only people that could be more proud right now than I am is probably their parents. But I am right up there with them as being proud of them.”

President of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Ryan Tarrant, was impressed with how middle school students answered tough questions.

“Some of the topics I know even our participants in the audience who are adults even had some trouble with,” said Tarrant

Tarrant allowed each student to choose their own topic to write about and present at the competition.

“I wrote about dress code in the United States and about how the individual dress codes are problematic, and the way they are enforced are often sexist and racist,” said 8th grader Eleanor Gero.

Shayan Challapalli, who earned second place in the Civic Bee, said all the hard work was worth it.

“I learned that you have to study a lot for this, and it paid off because I got $250,” said Challapalli.

Next Thursday at Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek will hold its Civic Bee to determine who it will send to Lansing for the state competition.
