The No. 10 Virginia baseball team dropped its first midweek game in almost two years on Tuesday, falling 7-4 to Old Dominion in front of 4,082 fans at Harbor Park in Norfolk.
The Cavaliers (28-9) lost in the middle of the week for the first time since a 9-7 loss in 10 innings to VCU on April 19, 2022, a stretch of 29 consecutive midweek victories. Including Tuesday night’s result, Virginia has only dropped two of its last 36 regular season non-conference games.
The Monarchs (19-17) limited the Cavaliers, who lead the nation in hits, to seven base knocks on Tuesday night, UVa’s second-lowest total of the season. Freshman Eric Becker was responsible for two of Virginia’s hits, his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Matthew Buchanan pitched three innings out of the bullpen, his longest outing since 2022, and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three.

Women’s basketball signs Maryland transfer
Virginia women’s basketball coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton announced that Maryland transfer Hawa Doumbouya will join the program for the 2024-25 season. Doumbouya, a 6-foot-7 center, competed as a true freshman for the Terrapins last season.
Doumbouya graduated high school in 2023 from Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Maryland), where she helped the Cougars win the IAAM B conference championship in 2022. The Bronx, New York native also competed for Nike EYBL and Team Takeover on the AAU circuit.
“We recruited Hawa my first summer here on Grounds two years ago and had a great connection, and even though she chose Maryland there were no hard feelings,” Agugua-Hamilton said. “Once we saw her name in the transfer portal, we jumped on the opportunity to add her to our program because we knew she would be a perfect fit. Hawa is a high-character student-athlete and fits our culture. She is a skilled post player with off-the-chart potential.”
