INDIANAPOLIS — A 52-year-old man has been critically injured after a Tuesday morning fire on the city’s east side.

The Indianapolis Fire Department said crews were called to a home in the 5800 block of Julian Avenue at approximately 9:30 a.m. Smoke was reportedly showing from the rear of the home with firefighters learning that one person and several animals were inside the house.

The victim was rescued from the home at approximately 9:41 a.m. and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

The fire department said a firefighter and a neighbor were checked at the scene for smoke inhalation but not taken to the hospital.

Two dogs escaped the burning home but one dog perished, the fire department said.

No working smoke alarms were found in the home.

The fire was marked under control at 9:51 a.m.
