DORA — City council members approved a pay raise for an administrative assistant Mayor Hezikiah Walker Jr. said was crucial to helping the city run smoothly.
Walker’s request for the pay raise came during Thursday’s regular city council meeting at Dora City Hall.
A motion by council member George Sides Jr. to approve the one-time raise of $2 an hour was seconded by council member Randy Spears and quickly approved by the council.
“Thank you very much. I couldn’t do this without her,” city clerk Stacy Turner said. “I can’t imagine trying to replace her right now, so I really appreciate this.”
Walker said the administrative assistant plays a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the city, especially assisting Turner in her role as city clerk.
“She’s been very instrumental in helping the city,” Walker said.
In other business, council members:
• approved minutes of the March 28 council meeting.
• briefly discussed old business.
Walker gave council members an update on the progress being made on the pavilion at the city lake. One issue remaining is the availability of handicap parking, he said.
The location designated for handicap parking is on a slight incline, making it unsafe, Walker said.
“I spoke to the contractors, and we’re working on details on how to rectify the situation to make a more suitable spot that’s adaptable for handicap accessibility,” he said.
• approved the bill list for April 9.
• approved departmental reports from the city’s various departments.
• heard from Christy Cato, a representative from Avenu Insights and Analytics, which works with local governments to offer administrative and financial support, as well as financial audits.
“For the city of Dora, we do all sales tax collections, alcohol tax … any type of rental taxes you may have,” Cato said.
Cato gave a fiscal year-to-date report and said the city “is doing really well” and “is on an upward trend.”

“We’d like to see the golf course get better,” he said.
