Driver struck pedestrian. He got out to check on her, then was killed by another car, cops say.

A driver was fatally struck by a car Thursday night in Somerset County after he got out of his vehicle to check on a woman he had just hit, police said.

Danti Bryant, 57, of Plainfield, was driving on Route 22 in North Plainfield near the Costco around 11:30 p.m. when he hit a 31-year-old borough woman, according to a release from the North Plainfield Police Department.

As he got out of his car to see what he had hit, the driver of another car traveling east on the highway swerved to avoid the pedestrian who had been hit and struck Bryant, the department said.

“He reportedly swerved to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway and did not see the second pedestrian exiting his vehicle until after he struck him,” North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti said in a statement.

The woman who was hit initially and Bryant were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he died from his injuries, police said. The woman suffered minor injuries.

The crashes are under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the department’s traffic safety unit at 908-769-2931.
