WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- Police responded to a bomb threat at an Ypsilanti hotel at the same time they responded to one at Eastern Michigan University, officials said.

Deputies from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office were called around noon on Tuesday, April 9, to the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest, 1275 S Huron St. in Ypsilanti Township, for a bomb threat, according to Derrick Jackson, spokesperson for the office.

An emailed bomb threat against both the hotel and Eastern Michigan University had been sent to several people, Jackson said. The threat against both the university and the hotel was made in the same email, EMU Spokesman Walter Kraft said.

The hotel was evacuated while police searched the hotel. Nothing was found and the “all clear” was given around 3:30 p.m., Jackson said.

Ten buildings in the northeastern part of the Eastern Michigan University campus were evacuated around the same time as the hotel, according to officials at the university.

The university issued a critical alert around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, asking students to evacuate Wise, Buell and Putnam residence halls. Shortly before 1 p.m., the university asked people to evacuate Walton, Sellers, Phelps, Best, Downing halls, as well as The Eastern Eateries and the Dining Commons.

An “all clear” message was sent from the university at 2:38 p.m.

“We greatly appreciate the cooperation of our students who also responded quickly and efficiently to the evacuation notice, which helped police do their job in a timely fashion,” Kraft said in a release.

The incident is still under investigation, he added.

This is the second time in several days the hotel has received a bomb threat. Police were called at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 7, to the hotel for a reported bomb threat directed at the Motor City Furry Con, organized for the weekend, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

Police received reports that an unknown individual sent an email claiming to have placed several explosive devices around the hotel, prompting the hotel to be evacuated, police said.
