Tickets on sale for Idina Menzel’s ‘Redwood’ and Matthew Broderick’s ‘Love Letters’ at La Jolla Playhouse
“Love Letters” on Dec. 4 will co-star Ellie Kemper, and the new musical “Redwood” is in such high demand that the run has already been extended.
Tickets went on sale Tuesday for La Jolla Playhouse’s world premiere musical “Redwood,” starring Tony Award-winning actress Idina Menzel. Demand for tickets has been so high that the show’s run has already been extended. It will now run Feb. 13-March 31, 2024.
Also now on sale at the Playhouse is a Dec. 4 staged reading of A.R. Gurney’s play “Love Letters,” starring two-time Tony-winner Matthew Broderick and Emmy-nominated actress Ellie Kemper. The play is about the lives of a man and woman who share their ups and downs with each other through letters and cards exchanged over 50 years.
Broderick is now starring in the Playhouse’s “Babbitt,” which is mostly sold out, and Kemper starred in the movie “Bridesmaids” as well as on TV in “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office.” The staged reading, directed by Rosie Glen-Lambert, is a fundraiser for the Playhouse. Tickets start at $250. The performance is at 7:30 p.m.
Menzel, the star of “Wicked” and vocal powerhouse behind Elsa in Disney’s animated “Frozen,” will play the lead role in “Redwood,” which features a book, lyrics and direction by Tina Landau and score and lyrics by Kate Diaz.
The musical will tell the story of Jesse, a successful businesswoman, mother and wife who is hiding a broken heart. Finding herself at a turning point, she leaves everything behind and drives to the West Coast, where she ends up in California’s redwood forest and finds community and healing. Tickets start at $25.
Tickets for “Redwood” and “Love Letters” can be purchased online at lajollaplayhouse.org.
