WATERLOO — Officials are investigating an overnight fire that destroyed an apartment building in Waterloo.
Crews with Waterloo Fire Rescue said they found the building at 400 Wellington St. engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene around 1:35 a.m. Monday.
The building has four apartments, and six people were home at the time, according to Capt. Bill Harter. He said all of the residents were able to escape without injuries, but one dog is unaccounted for.
Flames gutted the building, and heat from the blaze melted vinyl siding on a neighboring house.
Firefighters were unable to enter the building at first because of the extent of the flames and had to fight the blaze defensively.
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined and is under investigation by the city fire marshal.
