Wreaths Across America Volunteers Speaks To Mayville Senior Citizens

MAYVILLE – Patrick Norrod of Frewsburg told members of the Mayville Senior Citizens about his December 2023 trip to Maine for Wreaths Across America.

There he loaded his truck with 5,536 wreaths. He then headed back, stopping along the way to unload his wreaths to many, many cemeteries in many towns. Norrod had stories from each stop. The motto of the organization is to remember those that have fallen, honor those that served and teach the next generation. All the wreaths are made in Maine by cutting off just the tips of the trees each year.

Twenty-nine members and a guest enjoyed a potluck luncheon at the VFW in Mayville, NY on March 21, 2024.

Dianne Goodrich, devotional chairperson, told the group short stories/jokes, after which she led the in the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Janet Loomis, acting president, called the meeting to order. Both Jeff Wagner, President, and Laurie Magnuson, Vice President, were unable to attend the meeting.

A motion was made by Sharon Plucinski and seconded by Patti Snow to accept the secretary’s report as given. Correspondence noted that the Gideons International thanked the group for its $100 donation. Treasurer Kathie Sukalac gave the treasurer’s report.

Goodwill Chairperson Linda Anderson baked a birthday cake for the five members celebrating March birthdays: Bonnie L Johnson, Duane Frudd, Bill Tornstrom, Arlene Kurtz and Kathleen Sukalac. The group sang happy birthday. She also sent out four get well cards.

The tour director, Becky Dalziel, had several trip ideas for the group.

Program Chairperson Bill Tornstrom let the group know Sheriff Jim Quattrone will be the guest speaker in April. Quattrone will be speaking on his recent trip to Arizona to tour the border between the U.S. and Mexico. He spent time with the Arizona Border Region Enforcement team focusing on border security, narcotics, and human trafficking.

The kitchen committee, Joyce Ayers, Louise Richir and Dolly Gilbert, was thanked.

New member Dewey “Chip” Winchell of Westfield was welcomed.

Door prizes were won by Fred Himes, Darlene Barney and Bonnie L. Johnson. The lottery was won by Linda Anderson.

The group’s next meeting is April 4. Bring a dish to pass that goes along with beef on weck.
