Bellingham: Football ‘not doing enough’ to fight racism

Far too often have Real Madrid players been the subject of racist abuse this season.

At Mallorca on Saturday, a home fan was shown to be making a monkey gesture on the televised footage after Tchouameni scored the game's only goal.

In February 2023 at the same stadium, Vinicius Junior was subject to similar abuse, as he has been at a number of Spanish stadiums.

"I think in the games where we go away in La Liga especially you almost get so used to it," said Bellingham. "More needs to be done, whether punishments or how you react proactively.

"It’s horrible to prepare for a game knowing you might be abused, it is disgusting and the people in power need to do more.

"With Vini, over years, the blame gets shifted on to him because of how he plays, how he expresses himself. The game would miss players like Vini if he decided to take a break because of this kind of thing.

"More needs to be done to support these kind of players."

Bellingham's move to Real Madrid last summer was one that left pretty much every other in world football red with envy.

Manchester City were one of the clubs mentioned as potentially interested in the English midfielder, something he was asked about yesterday.

"I had good chats with clubs, including Dortmund," he said. "My family were great in helping me chew up that information, because it’s difficult, while you're still in the season, to take in the information and process it and still have to play at the weekend or in the Champions League.

"I had conversations with other teams, but when Madrid came in, it was a no-brainer really. The size of the club, the project, the plan going forward, the chance to play with such amazing players.

"I just jumped at it. That’s why I made my decision."

A lot of fuss is made about Jude Bellingham every time he steps on a football pitch.

That fuss increases when that pitch is in England.

This will be the sixth time he has faced Manchester City and the third time he has played at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League.

It is the team he has faced the most in Europe's premier competition, but a team he is yet to taste victory against.

Carlo Ancelotti claimed that every game for his team is like a final at the moment.

Once today's game is out of the way, Real Madrid host Barcelona on Sunday.

And, more often than not, finals need big players to stand up to be counted.

That is what Tchouameni was able to do against Mallorca and his absence will hurt Madrid later on — The Athletic's Mario Cortegana wrote about why at the weekend.

Like Manchester City, Real Madrid are leading their domestic league.

And like City, they won at the weekend.

Although, they were not quite as convincing winners with Tchouameni providing the only goal of the game within three minutes of the start of the second half. But calling it merely a 'goal' is doing the Frenchman a massive disservice.

He let fly from 30 yards and Mallorca goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic could only watch it nestle into his top corner.

A goal worthy of winning any game.

Goals have been like London buses for Josko Gvardiol this season.

It took 33 games for his first to arrive away to Real Madrid and then, four days later, he added a second.

And while it wasn't the goals he was signed for, they always help.

Sam Lee wrote about the 22-year-old's adaptation into a true Manchester City player, including some glowing praise from Guardiola — read it below.

Without disrespecting Luton Town, Manchester City had the fortune of a relatively easy task between the first and second leg.

Guardiola was able to make six changes to his starting XI and his side still made light work of Rob Edwards' side.

An own goal within two minutes set them on their way to a 5-1 win that included goals for Mateo Kovacic, Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Gvardiol as well as a consolation from Ross Barkley.

Job well done for the Premier League champions.

Real Madrid's travelling squad for the second leg

Real Madrid have not had the same fortune on the injury front as they remain without long-term absentees Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba.

They will not have Aurelien Tchouameni either after the Frenchman picked up a one-match suspension in the first leg. He was shown a first-minute yellow card, his third of the competition.

He was filling in at centre-back so it leaves Madrid with a potential problem, although Eder Militao came on the in dying minutes of their 1-0 win over Mallorca at the weekend. Whether he is fit for a full match is unclear, though.

There was a shock in the Man City line-up last week; the demotion of Kevin De Bruyne to a place on the bench. It was quickly put to bed by Guardiola who claimed the Belgian had vomited in the dressing room upon arrival.

Fortunately for all involved, De Bruyne put that behind him and was involved at the weekend against Luton and will expect to start today.

He could be joined in the starting XI by defensive pair Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake who both returned to the bench at the weekend after missing last Tuesday's first leg.

John Stones was absent from the squad on Saturday, but Guardiola did not seem unduly worried about the 'discomfort' that kept him out, so he should have a fully fit squad to choose from today.

Real Madrid sparked by Ancelotti invention – and Bernabeu magic

As soon as the final whistle blew in Real Madrid and Manchester City’s electric 3-3 draw, two men in suits greeted each other calmly and cordially on the sidelines, no worse the wear for having just masterminded one of the craziest games in the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola, who seem to never stop thinking and rethinking in search of an advantage, have taken this glittering modern European rivalry to another dimension in the process. Their sides have now scored 23 goals in their past five meetings. Tuesday’s quarter-final first leg in the Spanish capital was widely described as being worthy of the final and, in truth, it even exceeded expectations.

During Guardiola’s time as Barcelona manager, it was said in Spain that he always invented something when visiting the Santiago Bernabeu; a sign of personality, respect and perhaps nervousness.

On this occasion, it was Ancelotti who surprised everyone with something new.

Real Madrid 1-1 RB Leipzig (Vinicius Jr; Orban)

Just like the first leg, Real Madrid were fortunate to avoid a loss in the return leg, edging out a 2-1 aggregate win to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

RB Leipzig created several clear-cut chances to score but Andriy Lunin once again came up with big save after big save. The La Liga side doubled their aggregate lead in the 65th minute when Vinicius Junior scored on a counter-attack, but the Germans responded just three minutes later through Willi Orban to pull back within a goal.

The Bundesliga side almost forced extra time when Dani Olmo hit the woodwork in second-half stoppage time, but Madrid managed to see out the win.

RB Leipzig 0-1 Real Madrid (Brahim)

Real Madrid eked out a one-goal win in Germany in their first leg meeting with RB Leipzig, but this match very easily could have gone the other way.

The hosts started the contest on top and thought they had taken the lead in the third minute, only to have Benjamin Sesko's goal disallowed by VAR. They had numerous other chances to take the lead but it was instead Madrid's Brahim Diaz who would break the deadlock just after half-time, scoring a magnificent solo effort.

Andriy Lunin made several big saves as the Spanish side took their slender advantage home for the return leg.

Real Madrid were drawn into Group C alongside Napoli, Braga and Union Berlin.

Their campaign opened with what was quickly becoming a recurring theme as Jude Bellingham scored in stoppage time to take a 1-0 win over the German upstarts.

From there it was a pair of one-goal wins on the road over Napoli and Braga before more comfortable victories at home over the same two sides.

Madrid capped their group stage with another late victory over Union Berlin, finishing with a perfect record of six wins from six.

  • Real Madrid 1-0 Union Berlin (Bellingham)
  • Napoli 2-3 Real Madrid (Vinicius Jr, Bellingham, Meret OG)
  • Braga 1-2 Real Madrid (Rodrygo, Bellingham)
  • Real Madrid 3-0 Braga (Brahim, Vinicius Jr,
  • Real Madrid 4-2 Napoli (Rodrygo, Bellingham, Paz, Joselu)

For large parts, the performance in the first leg will have frustrated.

His team had nowhere near as much control as they are used to and they looked flustered under mounting Real Madrid pressure.

But, after riding those waves, they came through with their usual quality and the killer instinct to match.

The Athletic's Sam Lee wrote about the champions' steel shown by the holders in the Spanish capital — give it a read below.

Manchester City 3-1 Copenhagen (Akanji, Alvarez, Haaland; Elyounoussi)

City cruised into the quarter-finals on the back of yet another 3-1 win, advancing 6-2 on aggregate.

Goals from Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez inside the opening 10 minutes gave the Premier League side a four-goal cushion and all but ended the tie.

Copenhagen 1-3 Manchester City (Mattsson; De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Foden)

Manchester City travelled to Denmark to take on Copenhagen in the first leg of the round of 16.

Kevin De Bruyne's goal in the 10th minute got the holders off to a quick start, but Magnus Mattsson's incredible equaliser 24 minutes later gave the Danes hope.

It was to be short-lived, however, as Bernardo Silva restored City's advantage right before half-time.

Phil Foden scored in second-half stoppage time to secure a comfortable two-goal lead heading back to England for the return leg.

Manchester City were drawn into Group G alongside RB Leipzig, Young Boys and Red Star Belgrade.
