Why isn’t the content updating?

The app will only update when you refresh the content or the channels. This allows you to be in control of what you refresh and when.  It also means that content can be remembered by the app so you can read offline.
There are two main ways to refresh content which are highlighted in our short tutorial video, scroll down and watch below or view here.

How can I make updating and refreshing the app quicker?

There are a number of ways to make updating the app quicker.  The high-resolution photographs are large files, so for a reasonable download time the MailOnline app requires a Wi-Fi connection.

  • Check your connection

Firstly, check your internet connection and also the router box (this is the box you have at home, usually provided by your broadband supplier).  Generally, this router box is wireless G (802.11g) however, more modern versions are N (802.11n).  The connection on a N router will be faster than on the older G ones.  A wireless router may be easily purchased in a high street computer or electrical store.

  • Refreshing the app

You can refresh a single channel by using the refresh button on the right hand side of the page above the channel story list.

Another way is to refresh all your favourite channels in the app in one go. To do this use the refresh button at the left of the page next to the multi-coloured square. This will then offer you the option of doing a 'Quick sync' or a 'Full sync'.

A quick sync is useful if you are on 3G as the pictures will only be downloaded for articles as you look at them.   Full sync is great is great if you are planning to read offline as the app will download ALL the words and pictures on the channels you have selected / added as a favourite.

  • Updating and changing your favourite channels

You may change your favourite channels in the Settings section of the app.  To go to the Settings section, tap the multi-coloured square at the top left of the page, then tap Settings.

Selecting channels as favourites means that if you choose to refresh the whole app only these channels will update.

You may also re-order the channels so your favourite channels always appear in the app in that order.

I have no Wi-Fi connection and am using on 3G. How can I save on data costs?

If you are a 3G user, there is an option in the Settings section to only download data on Wi-Fi. To go to the Settings section, tap the multi-coloured icon at the top left of the page and then tap Settings. No downloads will go through your 3G connection when this is enabled.

This will still download data through 3G dongles or iPhone Wi-Fi hotspots as the app will treat this as a wireless connection - there may be costs associated with this from your network provider.
