Uber has launched a new audio safety alert, which reminds passengers to put on their seatbelts.

The reminder will be issued as a push notification through your Uber app, with users set to receive them on a “regular basis”. Your driver may also receive a notification. Uber already has a similar safety measure in the US. An example of the new alert reads: "Even on a short ride and seated in the back, use a seatbelt for safety."

Uber said in a statement: “To help keep everyone safe on the road, we are introducing a new feature that reminds you to buckle up. Here's how it will work: When a trip starts, the driver’s app may issue an audio reminder, as you simultaneously receive a push notification reminding you to buckle your seat belt. You can expect to receive these reminders on a regular basis.

“Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest ways to help keep you and any fellow riders safe. We understand that some riders may have medical exemptions from wearing a seat belt. This new feature is part of our commitment to continually improve the safety of both riders and drivers on the Uber app.”

Andrew Brem, Uber’s UK General Manager, said: “With millions of trips taking place on our platform across the UK, we know we have a responsibility to make every trip as safe as possible. With this new safety feature, we want to encourage both drivers and riders to buckle up every time — every seat and every ride.”

Roads minister Guy Opperman said: “Wearing a seatbelt is a simple step which can save lives and through our new THINK! campaign, we’re hoping to drive down deaths and injuries by making clicking in your belt second nature. Features like this are a vital part of raising awareness of the campaign and encouraging passengers to stay safe by belting up.”
