Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim would be a "great replacement" for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

That is the view of former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who "would like to see him" in the Premier League and is confident Amorim would be successful at Anfield.

Klopp confirmed back in January that he will be stepping down at the end of the season and Amorim has been identified as one of the frontrunners to take over this summer.

The 39-year-old has done an excellent job since taking over at Sporting in March 2020, winning 154 of his 217 games in charge, and is on the verge of securing their second league title in four years.

Matic, who played alongside Amorim during their time together at Benfica, has backed his former team-mate to be a perfect replacement for Klopp. "Ruben Amorim is an excellent person," Matic told O Jogo.

"He was one of those who helped me the most when I arrived at Benfica because he speaks English very well. I hope he hasn't forgotten how to speak it now!

"I see Ruben Amorim at a big club, I don't know if it will be Liverpool, but if it happens I'm sure he'll be a great replacement for Klopp because Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a great coach - he already currently is. I would like to see him in the Premier League Let's see what happens from now on."

Despite being one of the favourites to replace Klopp, Amorim angrily denied claims that he had reached a 'verbal agreement' to become Reds boss this summer.

Before his Sporting side played Gil Vicente last week, Amorim said: "Starting with the first question, this is the last time I'm going to talk about my future. There was no interview, much less an agreement, the only thing we all want here is to be champions for Sporting, nothing will change.

"I'm a Sporting coach, there was no interview or agreement with any club, I'm just focused as always on defending my club. As I no longer have anything else to say, there will be no interviews or agreements with the Sporting coach. The matter is completely resolved, whether for this or another club."
