Douglas County Sheriff's deputies accept expired and unused prescriptions on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in April of 2022.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is inviting community members to dispose of expired and unneeded prescription medicines for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at the end of April.

The sheriff’s office along with the Lawrence Police Department will be stationed outside the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St., on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept residents’ expired or unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

“The Sheriff’s Office continues to offer these events so that residents can have a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused medications. When we face the dangers of overdoses in our community, it’s important to offer this option so people can clean out their cabinets and know medications will be disposed of safely,” Sheriff Jay Armbrister said.

Residents can drive through to dispose of their unwanted medications anonymously and at no cost. Residents can also dispose of their pet’s prescriptions, but the sheriff’s office cannot accept needles, sharps or inhalers, according to the release. All items collected are delivered to the Drug Enforcement Administration to be safely destroyed.
