MCCLAIN COUNTY, Okla. — A Newcastle man was arrested in connection with the death of a 9-month-old baby.

On Monday, Hunter Allen Smiley, 25, was arrested and booked into McClain County Jail on a first-degree-murder charge.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) said this all started earlier this month when the Newcastle Police Department reached out for their assistance with a child abuse investigation.

OSBI said on April 10, officers received a call saying a 9-month-old baby was unresponsive at a Newcastle residence. The baby was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately died two days later.

Special agents spoke with Smiley, who is the baby's father and was with the child when officers arrived.

OSBI said they arrested Smiley for first-degree-murder. OSBI did not immediately specify what evidence led to the arrest, but said they made the arrest based on information they gathered during the investigation.

The baby was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office to determine a cause and manner of death.
