Michigan State Scrimmage Results and Takeaways

Michigan State football held its first scrimmage last Saturday.

After eight spring practices, Michigan State football had its first scrimmage.

Spartans offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren had a few words about how the team performed. As any team would have, Lindgren mentioned there were a number of turnovers and pre-snap penalties. Lindgren later mentioned that they are giving the team a lot of new information, and they are handling it exceptionally well and keeping a positive attitude. There are a few things that have to be cleaned up, but the coaches believe in the team, and the team believes in the coaches.

Quarterback Tommy Schuster has received praise from Coach Lindgren about his movement, keeping plays alive and his decision-making. The two incoming freshmen have shown a lot of promise for true freshmen and have a lot of potential.

Sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles is the big-name guy, the transfer quarterback from Oregon State, with many expectations and weight on his shoulders as the future of a struggling program.

Lindgren talked about the receivers not being in set positions as of now. With a young incoming pass-catching unit, there are spots to be moved around (slot players switching to the outside and vice versa).

Every receiver outside of Montorie Foster Jr. is either a freshman or a sophomore, which makes for a promising future as they have a long time to learn and improve their game. All the talk about the Spartans is Chiles, but Chiles can't be Chiles without a strong, together offense, which includes a complete receiving corps.

There are five Big Ten teams with a top-10 ranked pass defense, so the new Spartan squad has to plan on targeting the teams with a strong pass defense with the run and strong run defenses with the pass. Four teams in the Big Ten had a top-10 run defense, so the run will be slightly more effective, especially having older running backs than receivers.

With the progress made with the offensive line, quarterbacks, and receivers, the offense should handle these tough defenses.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
