A Lapeer County man was arraigned this week on alleged drunk driving charges after fatally injuring a 53-year-old man in Bruce Township in a head-on collision, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said Friday.

Jeffrey Scott Lucas, 55, of Imlay City was arraigned Wednesday in 42-1 District Court in Romeo before Judge Jennifer Andary. His charges included operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and operating while intoxicated third offense, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release. He was accused of striking a man head-on while switching lanes to pass another vehicle.

Andary set Lucas' bond at $750,000; if convicted on both charges, he could spend up to 20 years in prison.

Lucas was driving a Ram pickup truck to work at about 8:45 p.m. Monday, headed southbound on Brown Road near Reid Road in Bruce Township. He allegedly crossed over into the northbound lane and struck dirt bike rider Andrew Troia of Romeo head-on, while trying to pass another vehicle, prosecutors said.

Michigan State Police and medics arrived and found Troia had been injured. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, police reported. Lucas was not injured in the crash, police said.

Investigators believed Lucas was driving impaired and arrested him at the scene.

"A man's irresponsible choice to allegedly drive drunk caused a fatal collision resulting in the senseless loss of a life," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement. "The alleged drunk driver will be held fully accountable for his actions, as there's no excuse for such disregard for human safety."

Lucas' probable cause conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. April 23; his preliminary exam is set for 9 a.m. April 30.
