WESTON, Wis. (WSAW) - Connecting with others in your community is important no matter the relationship.

It’s why the D.C. Everest Area School District is holding a two-day event this week where they can connect with people who might not be familiar with the district. Tuesday marked the first day of what’s called ‘Community Connect’ and it’s a chance for people in our area to learn what goes on within the district.

The event is open to anyone in the community to help schools like D.C. Everest learn what community members want to see change.

“We’re really just looking to be as transparent as possible about the needs of kids, and how we’re trying to really meet them where they’re at,” D.C. Everest Area School District Superintendent Casey Nye said. “I think our families have lots of different ways to give us feedback.”

One of the topics that will be discussed is school financing. People will learn how their resources come in and what their school budget looks like.

“We are the community’s schools, quite literally, including our resources,” Nye said. “I mean, we are a taxpayer entity, and we’re trying to deliver on a mission to educate kids of tomorrow.”

Students will also be there to share what it is like to be a part of D.C. Everest schools.

“This population that we’re inviting tonight might not necessarily have their own student here, and we thought having the student leadership and the student voice at the table might just be an interesting and kind of fun dynamic,” Nye added.

Businesses, such as ones that support youth apprentice groups and work closely with kids in the community, will also be at these ‘Community Connect’ sessions. Nye said D.C. Everest schools have a long history of having community support. ‘Community Connect’ is another way to build on that.

“We are most successful when everyone is rowing together,” he said. “So that isn’t just about the people that work here, it’s definitely about our community, and our board values that input.”

Both ‘Community Connect’ sessions will take place in the D.C. Everest Administrative Building. If you were not able to attend the first session on Tuesday, they will have another on Thursday, April 18 from 7:30-9 p.m.
