A local couple was charged following a theft at a construction site.
On Wednesday, March 20, deputies with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office met with an employee of a local construction company who reported that items had been stolen from an active construction site. Video footage of the surrounding area, obtained by sheriff’s office detectives, and additional evidence led to the charges and subsequent arrest of 42-year-old Jerry Alvin Jones on Tuesday, March 26, and 36-year-old Barbara Crystal Surrett on Wednesday, March 27, according to a news release.
Jones and Surrett were charged with felonious breaking or entering and felonious larceny after breaking or entering.
Jones has a long criminal history dating back to 1997 that includes numerous convictions of felony larceny, breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, larceny of a motor vehicle, DWI, reckless driving, resisting and officer, and drug possession, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety website.

Jones was placed in the McDowell County jail under a $20,000 secured bond.
Surrett was placed in the McDowell County jail under a $1,000 unsecured bond.
Detective Grant Robinson handled the investigation.
