A man is in custody after police say he shot his father during a mental health episode Thursday, police said.

Officers responded to an address on Beacon Street in Hamden after receiving a 911 call reporting an accidental shooting and found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his abdomen, according to the Hamden Police Department.

Members of the Hamden Fire Department also responded and treated the victim, who was conscious and alert at the time, before he was taken to an area hospital, police said. The victim has been listed in stable but critical condition, according to police.

Police said their investigation led them to believe the victim’s son was was responsible for the shooting and was experiencing a mental health episode.

The son, identified as 25-year-old Aaron Gambrell, was arrested on charges of first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was held in lieu of $500,000 bail and was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation, police said.

“This was an isolated domestic incident,” Hamden Lt. Raymond Quinn said in a statement. “Public There is no danger to the public.”
